Nearly a week on from the Paris Olympics opening ceremony and controversy continues over the evening’s entertainment. The main point of contention remains the tableau entitled “Festivité”, featuring dancers, LGBTQ icons and drag artists like Nicky Doll, Paloma, and Barbara Butch. According to its detractors, the sequence was a “blasphemous” parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”. The ceremony’s artistic director Thomas Jolly has repeatedly said that it wasn’t inspired by “The Last Supper,” and that the sequence was “a great pagan festival linked to the gods of Olympus.” Still, the Fre...

French DJ, LGBTQ+ icon and feminist activist Barbara Butch has announced that she has filed a complaint, as she has been the subject of “a campaign of cyber harassment and defamation” of “unprecedented” violence, following her appearance at the Paris Olympic Games opening ceremony. “If at first I decided not to speak out to let the haters calm down, the messages I'm receiving are more and more extreme,” she wrote on her Instagram account. “All this for having had the chance to represent the diversity of my country through art and music, alongside other artists and performers I admire.” Audrey ...

Miami (AFP) - Many tattoos carry a deeper meaning behind them. But for Emily, the "7" on her left leg represents a nightmare, a branding imposed by a pimp. He forced all of the women under his control to get it, a common practice among human traffickers. So it's with excitement that Emily -- not her real name -- waits at a tattoo parlor in the southern US state of Florida. It's here that the painful reminder of her 17 years as a victim will be transformed into a new design, this time of her own choosing: a heart and a cross. The tattoo parlor, run by three women, participates in a program run...

Los Angeles (AFP) - A child abuse lawsuit over a nude scene filed by actors who played star-crossed lovers in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 "Romeo and Juliet" will be thrown out, a California judge said Thursday. Olivia Hussey was 15 and Leonard Whiting 16 when they starred in the Oscar-winning film of William Shakespeare's tragedy from Hollywood studio Paramount Pictures. The film featured a brief bedroom scene in which Whiting's buttocks and Hussey's bare breasts were visible, and the actors -- now both in their 70s -- claimed in a lawsuit filed in December that the movie amounted to sexual explo...
