GAINESVILLE, Fla. Campos Krauer planea exami...

Washington (AFP) - A 50-year-old man was executed by lethal injection Thursday in the southern US state of Alabama for the murders of an elderly couple, prison officials said. Jamie Ray Mills was the sixth Death Row inmate executed in the United States this year. Mills was sentenced to death in 2007 for murdering Floyd Hill, 87, and Vera Hill, 72, during a robbery. They were killed with a machete, tire iron and hammer. His wife, JoAnn Mills, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for her involvement in the 2004 murders and testified against her husband. Abortion opponents have maneuvered in courthouses for years to end access to reproductive health care. In Arizona last week, a win for the anti-abortion camp caused political blowback for Republican candidates in the state and beyond. The reaction echoed the response to an Alabama Supreme Court decision over in vitro fertilization just two months before. The election-year ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court allowing enforcement of a law from 1864 banning nearly all abortions startled Republican politicians, some of whom quickly turned to social media to denounce it. The court decision was yet ...

Washington (AFP) - Lawmakers in Alabama passed legislation Thursday to protect health workers at IVF clinics from legal liability after the southern US state's supreme court ruled frozen embryos are children, in an issue that has threatened to become an election flashpoint. Bills "to provide civil and criminal immunity" to people and entities providing such care in case an embryo is damaged or destroyed cleared both Republican-controlled chambers, the legislature's official webpage showed. The conservative state's Republican governor, Kay Ivey, who has also voiced support for protecting in vit...

Washington (AFP) - An Alabama university temporarily halted in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments on Wednesday after the high court in the southern US state ruled that frozen embryos outside the womb are children. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) said it had paused IVF treatments "as it evaluates the Alabama Supreme Court's decision that a cryopreserved embryo is a human being." "We are saddened that this will impact our patients' attempt to have a baby through IVF," the university said in a statement. "But we must evaluate the potential that our patients and our physicians coul...

Washington (AFP) - The White House said Friday it was "deeply troubled" by the first-ever execution in the United States using nitrogen gas, an untested method which also drew condemnation from the United Nations and European Union. The southern state of Alabama put Kenneth Smith, a 58-year-old convicted murderer, to death on Thursday by pumping nitrogen gas into a facemask, causing him to suffocate. "The use of nitrogen gas -- it is troubling to us," White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters. "We are deeply troubled by it." Recent executions in the United States have been carr...
