The southern German city of Munich will see its first alcohol-free beer garden open on Thursday, according to local officials. The business, named "Die Null" or "Zero" in English, is located by Munich Central Station and the Old Botanical Garden, in Karl-Stützel-Platz. Partially responding to slowing demand for alcohol in Germany, Die Null will only serve non-alcoholic drinks. Cultural events will also take centre stage at the venue, which will host bands, choirs, solo artists, and dancers. The project, explained Munich's council, is intended to "revitalise" an area that has fallen prey to cri...

If you search for "home still" on Amazon, you will see a bunch of products that are explicitly advertised as tools for producing liquor. But while it is legal to make beer, cider, or wine at home for your own consumption or to share with friends, unlicensed production of distilled spirits remains a federal felony punishable by up to five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both. That law is unconstitutional, a federal judge in Texas ruled last week. In addition to potentially protecting at least some DIY distillers from a daunting threat, the decision offers hope of constraining a federal gove...

Tequila-based margaritas and palomas have long been cocktail-menu staples, but their base ingredient - agave - is now shaking things up in new cocktails, putting a fresh spin on old favourites. While tequila, made from the blue agave plant, is the best-known of the agave spirits, mezcal has also grown in popularity recently. It's made from a wider variety of agaves across Mexico, and is roasted underground for a smokier flavour. Alan Uresti Silva, U.K. brand ambassador for The Lost Explorer Mezcal, notes that when he came to London from Mexico nine years ago, agave cocktails were rare in Londo...

In 1791, a proud and hearty band of rabble-rousers in western Pennsylvania protested the first tax ever to be levied on a domestic product by America's new federal government—a tax on the sale of whiskey. Today, the Whiskey Rebellion is primarily remembered as one of the country's first populist uprisings—and one that presaged many future clashes between the American heartland and government elites. However, debates over whether Alexander Hamilton's whiskey tax was a prudent revenue-raising scheme or an egregious instance of governmental overreach often overlook what was not in dispute during ...

This week's guest is Andy Mills, the co-creator of Reflector, a new documentary podcast. Reflector's early episodes delve into controversial treatments for alcoholism and the free speech implications of the trial of rapper Young Thug, whose lyrics are being used by prosecutors to build a RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) case. Mills is a legend in podcasting circles. He helped create The New York Times podcast The Daily, one of the most listened-to shows on the planet, and he produced the wildly popular and controversial The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling for The Free Pre...

A study on rats found that binge-like drinking of alcohol mixed with energy drinks during adolescence produced changes in the hippocampus region of the brain that were still detectable when the rats reached adulthood. These changes indicated a temporary boost in neural function while the rats were young, followed by a long-term reduction in the ability of the hippocampus to create new connections (synaptic plasticity) in adulthood. The study was published in Neuropharmacology. When they reach adulthood, many young people start drinking alcohol. In many cases, they drink a large amount of alcoh...
