Campaigners have warned that an International Maritime Organization (IMO) ban on heavy fuel oil may not reduce the use of the polluting marine fuel for another five years. From today, ships going through Arctic waters can no longer use or carry heavy fuel oil (HFO) under a UN shipping agency regulation that the IMO adopted in 2021. The ban is intended to prevent devastating environmental impacts on the sensitive Arctic region and its wildlife. But environmental groups are pointing to loopholes - such as geographic scope, exemptions and waivers - which mean many ships are still eligible to carr...

Intense wildfires above the Arctic Circle this June have released megatonnes of carbon into the atmosphere, according to EU scientists. Data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) shows that a majority of the fires are burning in the Sakha Republic in Russia's Far North. These seasonal blazes are moving north as climate change causes temperatures to rise in the Arctic. They tear through tundra and boreal forests, releasing greenhouse gases from the carbon-rich soil. ‘The largest increase in extreme wildfires over the last two decades’The Sakha Republic has seen much higher te...

It sounds like something from a sci-fi blockbuster: giant viruses are living in the Arctic ice. But the earth is not doomed \- these supersized infectious agents could actually help slow the melting of the ice, helping to alleviate global warming. According to findings published in May in the journal Microbiome, researchers at Denmark’s Aarhus University discovered the giant viruses in Greenland. They suspect they may slow the growth of black snow algae - which contributes to ice-melt. This ancient Antarctic ice reveals 50,000 years of vital climate change history'We can make a difference': Em...

Climate change is putting countless marine animals under pressure but jellyfish could actually benefit from warming ocean waters. A study by researchers at Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) looked at eight different species of Arctic jellyfish. They exposed them to rising water temperatures, sea ice retreat and other changing environmental conditions through computer models. Scientists found that by the second half of the century, seven of the eight species could expand their habitat polewards under these conditions. Simulations showed that the lion’s mane jellyfish - one of the biggest...

By The Conversation Paul Hunter , University of East Anglia Scientists have recently revived several large viruses that had been buried in the frozen Siberian ground (permafrost) for tens of thousands of years. The youngest virus to be revived was a sprightly 27,000 years old. And the oldest – a Pandoravirus – was around 48,500 years old. This is the oldest virus ever to have been revived. As the world continues to warm, the thawing permafrost is releasing organic matter that has been frozen for millennia, including bacteria and viruses – some that can still reproduce. This latest work was by ...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden's administration released a new Arctic strategy on Friday as the strategically and environmentally important region suffers worsening effects from climate change and sees increased international competition. Global warming is melting Arctic ice, opening previously closed areas to navigation and creating new opportunities for countries such as the United States, Russia and China to vie for resources and influence. The situation is further complicated by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia -- a major Arctic power -- which has increased tensions between Mos...

Washington (AFP) - Rapid warming of the Arctic is likely a key driver of extreme winter weather in the United States, according to a new study that addresses a longstanding apparent contradiction in climate science and could explain events like February's cold snap in Texas. The paper, published in the journal Science, used observational data and modeling to establish a link between planetary warming linked to human activity and a phenomenon called the stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) disruption. The stratospheric polar vortex is a band of westerly winds encircling the Arctic that under normal...

Washington (AFP) - Dinosaur species large and small made the Arctic their year-round home and probably developed wintering strategies like hibernation or growing insulating feathers, according to a new study. The paper, published Thursday in the journal Current Biology, is the result of more than a decade's worth of painstaking fossil excavations, and puts to rest the notion that the ancient reptiles lived only in hotter climes. "A couple of these new sites we found in the last few years turned up something unexpected, and that is they're producing baby bones and teeth," lead author Patrick Dr...

Reykjavik (AFP) - Arctic countries on Thursday pledged to fight global warming, which is happening three times faster in the Far North, and to preserve peace in the region as its geopolitical importance rises. Accelerated global warming, untapped resources, new maritime routes opened up by retreating sea ice, and the future of local populations all topped the agenda as foreign ministers of countries bordering the Arctic gathered in Reykjavik in Iceland. "We are committed to advancing a peaceful Arctic region where cooperation prevails on climate, the environment, science and safety," US Secret...
