Ukraine’s army was forced to retreat from key positions on Thursday as Russia inched closer. A military spokesperson said Ukraine’s army was forced to retreat from the outskirts of Chasiv Yar, a strategically important town in the eastern Donetsk region that has been reduced to rubble after months of Russian shelling. For months, Russian forces have focused on capturing Chasiv Yar. It is strategically located on an elevated location, and its fall would put nearby cities in jeopardy, compromise critical Ukrainian supply routes and bring Russia closer to seizing the Donetsk region. Ukraine's def...

A hidden gem in OdesaWalking down the gorgeous pastel lined shops of Odesa, you could be forgiven for almost forgetting you’re in a war zone. Piles of sandbags stacked next to the Opera House. Or anti-tank traps lurking menacingly in the background. Many of the city’s residents declare that Odesa is the pearl of Ukraine and that Russia wants to have it. It is a gorgeous city. A bit like Paris, but on the sea. And like Pari...

Major Ilya Yevlash said he cannot remember one day without the sound of suspected Iranian “kamikaze” drones wreaking havoc in his country. Since August 2022, Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russia have had to contend with so-called Shahed drones: a technology that, when launched, “destroys everything,” according to Yevlash, the spokesman of Ukraine’s Air Force. “If a Shahed hits an old building where there are a lot of people, they will totally destroy it,” Yevlash told Euronews Next. Shahed drones were used once again when Iran launched more than 300 missiles at Israel last week in what many saw ...

This might not seem the right time to talk about the Roma in Ukraine. The country’s leadership is struggling to maintain support from key allies. The US still hasn't delivered on its promise of support. And the Israel-Palestine war has captured the global public attention. Yet, here is why this is exactly the right moment to focus on the situation of the Roma in Ukraine — and why they are significant for Ukraine’s future. When we talk of the Roma in Ukraine, we are actually talking about what is at the core of the moral justifications of this war against Russia. On the one side, Vladimir Putin...
