Stijn Verrept knew in 2018 that his company needed to find an unconventional solution if they were going to develop a quality smart lamp to detect the motion of an older person’s fall to notify caregivers. Verrept, the founder of Belgian startup Nobi, tried manually calculating the distance a person could fall, mounting cameras to the ceiling or the lamps themselves with no luck. The tech is meant to allow the elderly to stay in their homes. They decided to pivot to artificial intelligence (AI), with the company choosing NVIDIA microchips for their high processing power and the ability to quic...

Brazil’s national data protection authority determined earlier this week that their new policy causes “the imminent risk of serious and irreparable or difficult-to-repair damage to the fundamental rights of the affected data subjects,” the agency said in the nation’s official gazette. Brazil is one of Meta’s biggest markets, with Facebook alone having around 102 million active users in the country, the agency s...

Three years ago, Google set an ambitious plan to address climate change by going 'net zero', meaning it would release no more climate-changing gases into the air than it removes, by 2030. But a report from the company on Tuesday shows it is nowhere near meeting that goal. Rather than declining, its emissions grew 13 per cent in 2023 over the year before. Compared to its baseline year of 2019, emissions have soared 48 per cent. Google cited artificial intelligence (AI) and the demand it puts on data centres, which require massive amounts of electricity, for last year’s growth. Making that elect...

Nearly all submissions generated by artificial intelligence (AI) went undetected in a recent test of UK universities' exam systems. The AI-generated papers also received on average higher grades compared to those written by real students, researchers at the University of Reading found. They published their findings in the open-access journal PLOS ONE. Artificial intelligence already has proven that it can pass exams which has led some schools and universities to ban students from using available AI tools such as ChatGPT. However, applying this rule proved to be challenging, according to the ne...
