Polish foreign minsiter Radek Sikorski hosted the UK's new foreign minister on Sunday at his mansion in Chobielin, some 300 kilometres northwest of the capital Warsaw. Lammy is seeking to tighten UK relations with the European Union and stress that the new government is just as supportive of Ukraine in its war against Russia. He said he was visiting Britain's “key partners” in Europe — Poland, Germany and Sweden, all NATO members — for cooperation and security talks. He also said that the UK’s military, economic, political and diplomatic support for Ukraine will remain unwavering, but that it ...

It's dominated British politics for the best part of a decade - but Brexit has been something of a taboo on the campaign trail as the UK gears up for Thursday's general election. "Both main parties have tried to discuss Brexit as little as possible," Joel Reland, Research Fellow at think tank UK in a Changing Europe, told Euronews. "Voters have been quite disappointed with what has been delivered (on Brexit) so Conservative prime minister Rishi Sunak doesn't want to draw attention to that." "And for Labour, Keir Starmer is trying to win back seats in the 'Red Wall', which voted to leave the EU...

Trade bodies representing garden centres in the UK and the EU have signed an open letter calling upon political leaders to tackle a post-Brexit border "crisis". They claim that new changes to import procedures, applied in April, are causing delays, damage, and extra costs for those bringing plants into the UK. "The UK has a unique border with the EU in terms of trading plants and plant products," said the letter. "Nowhere else in the world is there a border that sees such a volume of plants and plant products traded between countries that do not have a form of sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) ...

As UK voters prepare to elect a new government on Thursday, many among its expats in Spain have expressed apathy towards the vote. In the seaside town of Rojales, many UK citizens say they feel at home, but Brexit has complicated their lives. The day begins slowly on the Costa Blanca. Some choose to go for a round of golf, while others prefer a long chat over coffee. This is how life is for the 300,000 UK citizens, mostly retired, who have chosen Spain as their home. "We've worked all our lives, so we want to have fun," one of them says. In the cafes, people read English newspapers, which feat...

The United Kingdom is heading to the polls on Thursday to elect 650 new members to the House of Commons, with opinion polls painting a picture of Labour dominance few would have thought possible in the previous vote in 2019. That election saw the then-prime minister Boris Johnson secure a solid Conservative majority in parliament and clinch a symbolic mandate to “get Brexit done.” He did so by winning over major Labour heartlands in the traditionally working class "red belt" of Northern England and the Midlands. The UK has since formally exited the European Union - but life after Brexit has be...

Labour leader Keir Starmer has vowed to "get a better deal on trade relations with the EU" if he becomes prime minister in next week's UK general election. "I do not accept that we can't get a better deal than the one that we've got," Starmer said during a BBC head-to-head debate with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday evening, presented by Michal Husain. "I'm going to go back into the EU. I'm going to fight for a better deal so you can trade more easily," he added, responding to a question from the audience about how the candidates would restore the UK's ability to trade freely. The UK f...

After being delayed for years, the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is expected to come into force this autumn. Brits and other ‘third-country’ holidaymakers will need to register their arrival and departure from EU and Schengen Area countries by having their photo and fingerprints taken at passport control. This will replace the manual passport stamp. But many travellers remain uncertain about how the system - and the follow up European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) due in mid-2025 - will work. Euronews Travel spoke to travel bodies, agents and experts to find out what advic...

The UK has seen clothing and footwear exports to the EU fall significantly post-Brexit, according to a report by the online marketplace Tradebyte and consultancy Retail Economics. This is mainly due to increasing red tape and stricter border regulations. Footwear and clothing exports to the EU have dropped more than 50% from 2019 levels, to £2.7 billion (€3.17 billion) in 2023. In comparison, back in 2019, it was £7.4 billion. In turn, this has led to non-food goods exports to the EU single market falling 18%. This decrease is despite the European e-commerce market being very well developed. A...

Getting the right to live and work in another country can be a long and difficult process. But that’s not always the case for those with money to spend. Golden visas offer the opportunity for wealthy people to essentially ‘buy’ the right to residency - sometimes without even having to live in the country. And their popularity in the European Union is growing as people look to move away from political decisions such as Brexit that may limit their rights. With the unsettled political and social environment in the US in recent years, applications for golden visas from Americans were also projecte...
