With the UK’s general election just a week away, the reigning Conservative Party looks set to suffer a devastating defeat after 14 years in power. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the party’s poll numbers have remained stuck at a record low for more than a year and a half — and the election he called by surprise at the end of May has done nothing to improve them. Instead, the campaign has been a catastrophe. Sunak announced the snap election outdoors in the pouring rain, then appeared at the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, where reporters duly asked him if his party resembled a ...

With just two weeks to go until a snap general election, Britain’s ruling Conservative Party looks set to face what could be its biggest defeat in more than a century. While the Labour Party is expected to win a landslide victory, much of the credit for the Conservatives’ downfall will be due to an insurgent party to their right. According to the polls, the anti-immigration, anti-”woke” and culturally traditionalist party Reform UK, led by leading Brexit activist and former MEP Nigel Farage, is set to take as much as 15% or more of the national vote. One poll that showed it leading the Tories ...

Populist Brexit-backer Nigel Farage was doused with what appeared to be a milkshake as he kicked off his campaign on Tuesday for the Britain’s July 4 general elections. He had just left a pub in the eastern seaside town of Clacton-on-Sea where he had been speaking to the media, when a bystander threw the drink over him. Police say they have arrested a 25-year-old woman from Clacton on suspicion of assault. The populist politician and former European Member of Parliament is making his eighth attempt at winning a seat in the House of Commons. After initially saying he would not stand in the elec...

The report by National Audit Office revealed that customers cumulatively spent 798 years on hold waiting to speak with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in 2022-23 – more than double the time spent waiting in 2019-20. The public spending watchdog said that a variety of factors had contributed to poor call handling performance by HMRC. They included funding pressures, job cuts and a drive to reduce costs by encouraging people to manage their tax affairs online. The average time spent waiting on the phone to speak to an adviser in the 11 months to February 2024 was almost 23 minutes, the NAO said, wel...

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that his government will increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by the end of the decade. Sunak made the announcement during a visit to Warsaw, where he also unveiled a new pledge to send arms to Ukraine. He said the government is putting the UK's defence industry “on a war footing", describing it as the “biggest strengthening of our national defence for a generation”. "In a world that is the most dangerous it has been since the end of the Cold War, we cannot be complacent," he said at a news briefing in the Polish capital alongside NATO secretary ...

If there was anyone who imagined that, after kowtowing to Boris Johnson throughout his dismal premiership, leading her own dangerous and divisive culture war campaign for the Tory party leadership contest, crashing the UK economy in one afternoon, and resigning after a mere seven weeks as Prime Minister, Liz Truss would beat a quiet, shamefaced retreat from the public eye, then those people - and there can’t have been many - need to think again. Today, the shortest-serving British Prime Minister ever releases her new book, the ominously (and poorly) titled 'Ten Years to Save the West: Lessons ...
