Two men are currently facing a criminal trial in Italy for allegedly poaching and smuggling some of the world’s most threatened cacti from Chile’s Atacama Desert into Europe. The public prosecutor of Ancona accuses Andrea Piombetti and Mattia Cresentini of importing and exporting endangered cacti without the required permits. Piombetti, in particular, is alleged to have uprooted more than 900 cacti himself from their natural habitat during repeated trips to Chile. Thousands of skateboarders took to the streets of Santiago's capital to celebrate World Skateboarding Day on Sunday. The tradition, which has more than two decades of history, was established in 2004 by the International Association of Skate Companies (IASC) to celebrate skate culture and promote skateboarding. Sunday saw the streets of the Chilean capital, Santiago, come alive with the energy of thousands of skateboarders. They showcased their acrobatics and enjoyed their sport, all while being cheered on by delighted outlookers.

The accident occurred early Thursday when a test train with about ten crew members collided with a freight train carrying copper. Among the injured, four were Chinese nationals, and their conditions are unknown. The passenger train, conducting speed tests, ended up suspended over the freight train after the crash. BHP and Anglo American have finally ended weeks of tense negotiation talks, with BHP recently pulling out of the takeover deal after three rejected bid proposals. Anglo American, which refused to further extend the deadline for BHP to come back with a revised fourth proposal, left BHP with little choice under British law but to withdraw and not offer again for at least six months. Copper prices jumped to their highest in 15 months in April, touching $4.3 (€4.01) per pound, before settling at $4.2 per pound on Thursday morning. This was a weekly rise of 1.61% and a monthly increase of 9.05%. This is mainly due to worries about lower supply, as well as steadily increasing demand.
