Weather alerts, forest fires, melting pavement in cities: A deadly heatwave has sent temperatures in parts of central and southern Europe soaring toward 40 degrees Celsius. From Italy to Romania, authorities warned people to be cautious, drink plenty of water and avoid going outside during the hottest hours of the day. Italian authorities declared a red weather alert in seven cities on Thursday, mostly in the central parts of the country but also the capital Rome and Trieste in the northeast. The heat conditions are aggravated by humidity and could affect healthy people as well as those with h...

In a world increasingly disrupted by the ongoing climate crisis, it’s perhaps unsurprising that our oceans are feeling the long-term effects of marine heatwaves. Right on our doorstep, the Mediterranean is a particular hotspot for this phenomenon. Some areas of the sea can see temperature anomalies of 5, 6, or even 7 degrees above average. That is not good news for marine ecosystems, as habitats are disappearing and fish stocks are moving to different areas of the ocean. Pippa Moore is a professor of Marine Science at Newcastle University in the UK. She is hopeful that changes can be made to m...

An NGO has warned of extreme heat in Hong Kong’s subdivided flats and rooftop homes, which house more than 220,000 residents, as the city logged the hottest day in the year so far on Sunday, when the mercury soared to 34.8 degrees Celsius. Anti-poverty NGO the Society for Community Organisation (SoCO) said on Sunday that it had surveyed 308 people living in “inadequate housing” such as subdivided flats, rooftop and cage homes from June 14 to Saturday. Over 90 per cent said they had felt ill because their apartments were too hot. Over the past two weeks, the Hong Kong Observatory had issued a v...

The first six months of 2024 have been “abnormally warm” in Hong Kong according to the government forecaster, with a mean minimum temperature of 21.4 degrees Celsius from January to June the highest ever recorded for the period. June, which began with “generally cloudier and showery weather,” ended with nine consecutive very hot days from June 20 to 28, the Hong Kong Observatory said in a statement on Wednesday, noting that is was “one of the longest [periods] on record for June.” Last Thursday, charity the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association said it had seen “a significant increase in the ...

Travellers can now take a short international flight in an electric aircraft from Maastricht Aachen Airport in the Netherlands. It is a two-month trial of "The Electrifly project" in which people can fly without emissions between the airports of Maastricht, Liège, and Aachen (Merzbrück). These are flights of between 30 and 50 kilometres and it is expected that initially, mainly business people will use them. According to Jonas van Stekelenburg, the flight gives no emissions and less noise. "That is of course the dream everyone has," says Stekelenburg. Only one passenger can fit on the plane ne...

There are six times as many direct flight connections between European cities than direct train connections, a new analysis by Greenpeace has found. In several major European cities there are no direct trains to any of the other cities included in the study at all. There are many more direct flight routes than train routes in EuropeCampaigners analysed 990 routes between 45 major European cities and found that 114 routes (12 per cent) are served by direct train connections. There are another 305 routes (31 per cent) where a direct connection would be possible using existing tracks, but the rou...

After extreme weather events in Switzerland that have left at least four people dead, the Alpine country might have become further imperilled by natural disasters, a member of its government said. “Are we going to experience one catastrophe after another every summer? Or is this an exception? Nobody knows. But certainly, the accumulation of such events worries us and shows how vulnerable we are,” Swiss Federal Council member Ignazio Cassis said on Sunday. At least three people were killed in a landslide in Maggia Valley, according to Swiss public broadcaster SRF, as local police found the body...

Relief tempered with caution has been the response from Brussels-based campaigners to last night's agreement on the EU’s five-year strategic agenda and its recognition of a triple environmental crisis, with some concerned by the possible impact of an overarching commitment to boosting Europe’s competitiveness and industrial base. “Our natural environment is facing increasing damage and disruption due to climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution,” heads of government acknowledged near the top of the document, which is intended to inform the policy making of the new European Commission set...

Greece’s summer season has got off to a tragic start with its earliest heatwave on record causing several deaths this month. At least six tourists are known to have died in the searing temperatures, which also shut schools and sites including the Acropolis. One firefighter also lost his life while battling a wildfire last week, as blazes broke out across the country “almost every 10 minutes” according to the fire service. Temperatures in Athens are currently below the official heatwave threshold of 38C, but little respite is expected for the rest of the summer. There is no doubt that the Medit...

Canada's historic wildfires last year pumped more heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the air than India did by burning fossil fuels. Put another way, the fire spewed nearly four times the carbon emissions as flights do in a year. This is the same amount of carbon dioxide that 647 million cars put in the air in a year, based on US EPA data. The new data lays bare the vicious circle of wildfires - they are becoming more frequent due to global warming which is caused by burning fossil fuels which produces emissions. Forests remove a lot of emissions from the atmosphere so when they burn down they ...
