Already 2024 is a record-shattering year for the climate as May set a new global temperature record for the 12th month in a row. “The next 18 months are critical in the fight to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5C,” according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. There are less than six months until UN climate conference COP29. But the European Parliamentary elections earlier this month saw a lurch to the far right and a rejection of green-leaning parties and policies, leaving climate-concerned citizens without an official voice. In response, climate groups have embraced their dem...

Recent months have seen a backlash - or ‘greenlash’ - against the European Green Deal, the main policy of the European Commission under President Ursula von der Leyen: the most visible of these being the farming protests that blocked the border between Spain and France. And with voters heading to the polls this week to vote for a new European Parliament, surveys indicate increased support for politicians who want to weaken these policies, lower climate goals, or ignore environmental actions altogether. The Euronews Super Polls show that the European Parliament will likely have a strong right-w...

At time of writing, riot police have arrived at the University of California, Los Angeles to disperse a pro-Palestinian protest against Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. The police’s arrival and removal of protestors is the latest example of a heavy-handed institutional response to student protests against the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The protests at UCLA are some of the biggest US student demonstrations since the anti-Vietnam War protests in the 60s. The arrival of the riot police follows violent clashes when Zionist counter-protestors attacked the encampment of students and faculty members a...

Trudi Warner (63) had been arrested last March and accused of “deliberately targeting” jurors before a trial of climate activists from the group Insulate Britain. She held a sign in front of Inner London Crown Court that said: “Jurors you have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to your conscience.” High Court Justice Pushpinder Saini said yesterday (22 April) her ac...
