The European Commission is sticking to a goal of ramping up ‘green’ hydrogen production from almost nothing to millions of tonnes a year by 2030 despite the European Court of Auditors (ECA) concluding today (17 July) that the target looks more aspirational than realistic. “The EU is unlikely to meet the targets it set for 2030,” lead author Stefan Blok told reporters ahead of the publication of an ECA report into EU hydrogen policy. “As a result, four years after the publication of the Hydrogen Strategy, we are calling for a reality check.” The highly flammable gas has been touted as a ‘green’...

A new emissions trading system (ETS) adding a carbon price to the cost of fossil fuels used to heat homes and power road transport, could prove a headache for the next European Commission, a senior official has acknowledged. “I think certainly it will be an inflection point,” the head of cabinet to EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson said on Monday (24 June) of the levy due to take effect in 2027. “It may become very controversial,” Stefano Grassi said during a policy discussion hosted by Euronews. “In our analysis, most of the burden will not be sustained by citizens or final consumers, but m...

Russia’s war in Ukraine has emitted roughly 175 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 24 months, according to the most comprehensive such study of any war to date. This is the equivalent of the annual use of 90 million cars and could cost Russia nearly €30 billion in reparations for the climate damage it has caused. The report comes from the Initiative on Greenhouse Gas Accounting of War (IGGAW) which has been developing new methodologies to measure this ‘conflict carbon’. The initiative’s series of assessments is the first to map the emissions of any war on such a comprehensive scale. Where doe...

Germany is aiming to make the EURO 2024 football tournament the greenest ever but its ambitions could be higher if national teams just played ball and cut out flying, according to Transport & Environment (T&E). National teams could slash their emissions by 60 per cent if they opt out of flying and choose to travel by train or coach, an analysis by the umbrella organisation representing NGOs promoting sustainable travel found. Unfortunately, no team besides Germany, Portugal, and Switzerland has yet to make such a pledge. "UEFA and the hosts Germany have put a lot of effort into cutting transpo...

EU trucks will need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 90% from current levels by 2040, as transport ministers agreed today (May 13) to gradually increase the share of zero-emission vehicles in the heavy-duty fleet across the bloc. Despite attempts by Italy, Poland and Slovakia to block the law, the new rules on heavy-duty vehicles keep the existing 2025 target currently set at a 15% emissions reduction for heavy lorries weighing over 16 tonnes. The law further sets that from 2030, new trucks weighing over 7.5 tonnes need to reduce emissions by 45%, going up to 65% from 2035 and finally rea...
