London (AFP) - Britain on Tuesday launched a review of its armed forces, with the former NATO chief leading the evaluation warning the world faces a "deadly quartet" of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea. The assessment, ordered by Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer less than a week after he returned from a NATO summit, will set out a path to increasing defence spending to 2.5 percent of GDP. The Ministry of Defence said the Strategic Defence Review would begin work "immediately in recognition of the urgency of the threats facing the UK", and aim to deliver a report in the first half of 2025....

The potential re-election of Donald Trump as US President poses a significant threat to the eurozone economy, with economists warning of a possible €150 billion hit, equivalent to about 1% of the region's gross domestic product. This impact stems from anticipated negative trade repercussions and increased defence expenditures. The recent attack in Butler, Pennsylvania, where former President Trump sustained an ear injury, has boosted his re-election odds. Prediction markets now place Trump's chances of winning at 71%, a significant rise from earlier figures, while his opponent, Joe Biden, has ...

NATO’s reassuring language that Ukraine’s path to membership of the alliance is “irreversible” represents a step forward, says Ukrainian deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishnya. It’s a ‘very strong message on membership’ – she told Euronews. Moreover, it’s a ‘clear signal to Russia’ about Ukraine’s future, she said. Several experts say membership is the ‘only’ guarantee of Ukrainian security in particular because the majority of Ukrainian territory would be covered by Article 5 of the NATO Treaty which ensures an attack on one ally is responded to as if it were an attack on all allies. "It's n...

Warsaw (AFP) - China is staging army drills with Belarus this week at NATO's eastern border, in a sign of escalating tensions between Beijing and the US-led defence alliance. The joint "antiterrorist" exercises on Russian ally Belarus's soil near the Polish border come as NATO leaders gather for a summit in Washington, with the war in nearby Ukraine high on their agenda. With relations between NATO on the one hand and China and Russia on the other at a low ebb, analysts believe that Beijing wanted to send the alliance a warning message with the timing of the drills. Sino-Belarusian exercises ...

Economic researchers of the Munich-based ifo Institute warned on Wednesday of immense economic costs if compulsory military service is reintroduced in Germany. Depending on the scenario, the move would reduce German economic output by between €3 billion and €70 billion ($75.7 billion), according to calculations by the researchers. Germany effectively abolished military conscription in 2011, although the country's law continues to allow for mandatory service in the event of war or other tensions. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has brought the German military's shortfalls into renewed f...

The proposed increase in defence spending earmarked in Germany's 2025 draft budget is nowhere near enough to "do justice" to the current security situation nor to "Germany's responsibility to the world," the head of the German Armed Forces Association has said. André Wüstner, the chairman of the organization which represents the interests of some 200,000 active soldiers, reservists and former army members, told dpa: "The German government may want to get through this legislative period with this budget, but the Bundeswehr as an essential part of our security architecture - and therefore all of...

Germany is to surrender control of its airbase in Niger after failing to reach agreement with the Nigerien authorities on legal immunity for its military personnel, the Defence Ministry informed parliament in Berlin on Saturday. The airbase in Niamey, a key asset in Western efforts to contain terrorism in the region, is to close on August 31, by when all the troops stationed there will have returned to Germany. It was previously staffed by 100 German military personnel. According to the Defence Ministry's note to parliament, which has been seen by dpa, the government has "reassessed" changes i...

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner has defended decisions on next year's budget taken by the ruling three-party coalition, in particular those regarding the Defence Ministry, in comments to Bild newspaper on Saturday. "The defence minister is getting more money than in the previous budget, but he is getting less money than what he called for in public," Lindner, a member of the pro-business liberal FDP, told the mass-circulation tabloid. "This is the entirely normal budgetary process," he said, pointing out that a minister worked passionately for his department and asked for the maximum...
