According to the last polls before Sunday's second round of legislative elections, the far-right party National Rally (RN) of Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen will have a hard time reaching an absolute majority. French voters' opinion of Emmanuel Macron has only fallen further since he called for snap elections this month, with some criticising him as narcissistic and disconnected. "The rejection of the president of the Republic has never been so large," said Alain Duhamel, a journalist and political essayist. He is also the author of a recent book on the French president. Macron's decision to dissolve the National Assembly and call for legislative elections on 30 June and 7 July "symbolises and reinforces this rejection," said Duhamel. Voters' falling out with Macron was further highlighted by the lo...

The dissolution of the National Assembly in France after the first exit polls published after the vote dominated the debate election night in the corridor of Brussels. Rassemblement National (RN, National Rally) led by Marine Le Pen got an historic 31.5%, while French President Emmanuel Macron reached a 14.7% - not even the half. In general, the far-right made notable individual gains across the continent, but their overall surge in the European Parliament was more restrained than expected. The centre-right European People's Party (EPP) got the majority of the votes in this European elections....

An exit poll from Thursday's Dutch European elections saw the pro-European Labour/Green alliance edging ahead of the far-right Freedom Party PVV, with the latter the clear winner projected to scoop seven seats from one. However Geert Wilders PVV had been expected to outperform even that tally, and was forecast - following its commanding showing in national elections in November last year - to bag nine seats. Caveat: this was an exit poll and the final figures may change. So this appears to have been a big win for the PVV, but not in line with forecasts for a far-right deluge. We asked our Dutc...

Periods of silence in political campaigning during a given period before polling, or election 'purdahs', are common across EU member states. Such bans affect different media, which can no longer share information about candidates or comment on opinion polls. The goal is to give voters a period of reflection without being influenced by external elements. According to a European Parliament study, most voters already know in advance whom they will vote for, but younger voters, without established voting habits, are more likely to make a last-minute decision. In some countries, the decision is mad...
