To save the imperilled spotted owl from potential extinction, US wildlife officials are set to kill almost a half-million barred owls that are crowding out their cousins. The contentious plan will see trained shooters deployed into dense West Coast forests. The US Fish and Wildlife Service strategy released on Wednesday is meant to prop up declining spotted owl populations in Oregon, Washington state and California. Documents released by the agency show up to about 450,000 barred owls would be shot over three decades after the birds from the eastern US encroached into the West Coast territory ...

Two men are currently facing a criminal trial in Italy for allegedly poaching and smuggling some of the world’s most threatened cacti from Chile’s Atacama Desert into Europe. The public prosecutor of Ancona accuses Andrea Piombetti and Mattia Cresentini of importing and exporting endangered cacti without the required permits. Piombetti, in particular, is alleged to have uprooted more than 900 cacti himself from their natural habitat during repeated trips to Chile. This is illegal under Italian laws that apply the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (...

Over 45,000 species are now threatened with extinction - 1,000 more than last year - according to an international conservation organisation. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released its latest Red List of Threatened Species on Thursday. It blames pressures from climate change, invasive species and human activity such as illicit trade and infrastructural expansion for sending more species to the brink of existence. Now in its 60th year, the list sounds the alarm about animals and plants at risk of extinction, but it also highlights conservation success stories such as...

There’s good news for wildlife as one of Europe’s key carnivores bounces back from “near extinction”. Until recently, the Iberian lynx had been on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) endangered list. The population of the medium-sized wildcat, endemic to the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, had been declining because of overhunting, poaching and loss of suitable habitats. Their main prey, the European rabbit, is also becoming more scarce due to diseases like myxomatosis. Now, however, the IUCN has downgraded the status of the Iberian lynx after conservation effor...

By Hans Nicholas Jong JAKARTA — A project to revive zebra shark numbers in Indonesia’s Raja Ampat archipelago has welcomed the successful hatching of 24 pups so far this year, including five most recently in April. The newest hatchling, Lingka, was named by the Indonesian public in an online poll. The name means “roaming” in the Acehnese language of northern Sumatra, at the other end of the Indonesian archipelago from Raja Ampat, with the hope that the shark will thrive in the wild and roam the waters of Raja Ampat. By Liz Kimbrough In California’s Monterey Bay, where the vast Pacific Ocean meets lush kelp forests, sea otters, especially the females, are becoming more resourceful. These charismatic marine mammals, known for their playful nature and voracious appetites, are facing new challenges and using tools to overcome them. For generations, southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) have relied on the abundant urchins and abalone that populate the kelp forests as their primary food sources. These preferred prey items are relatively easy for otters to crack open and provide a rich source of nutrients....
