Over 60 per cent of Hong Kong’s elderly whose children had moved overseas were at “high risk” of social isolation, a survey has found amid an emigration wave. Hong Kong’s legislature has passed a bill that would allow for non-locally trained dentists to practice in the city in a bid to ease a labour shortage in the dental profession. Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau on Wednesday called the changes introduced by the bill “historic,” saying the amendment was the “first large-scale and comprehensive” change made to the city’s Dentists Registration Ordinance in over 60 years. A Hong Kong civil servant has died while climbing Mount Fuji, the first recorded fatality since the start of the summer climbing season at Japan’s tallest mountain. Hong Kong’s Ruttonjee Hospital has reported a cluster of Covid-19 cases involving 14 patients and one staff member. All are in stable condition. The public hospital in Wan Chai announced on Thursday that 12 male and two female patients in its geriatric infirmary ward had developed a fever and tested positive for Covid-19 since last Thursday. The first six months of 2024 have been “abnormally warm” in Hong Kong according to the government forecaster, with a mean minimum temperature of 21.4 degrees Celsius from January to June the highest ever recorded for the period.
