To date, July 22, 2024, was the warmest day ever recorded on Earth, according to data from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). What's more, over the last few decades, Europe has been warming nearly twice as fast as the global average, according to C3S director Carlo Buontempo. This is due to a combination of different factors, he said. One of them is that the Arctic, part of which is included in the institute's definition of Europe, is probably one of the fastest warming regions in the world. Another reason is the loss of ice and snow in the mountains, as well as on t...

The European Union sent the first payment worth €150 million ($162 million) from a €400-million emergency fund to the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Wednesday. The fund "supports a substantial reform agenda and paves the way for the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement. Composed of loans and grants, the commission announced the financial aid for the PA earlier in July with two more payments scheduled in August and September. These payments are "subject to progress" by the PA in carrying out reforms, the commission stressed....

Austria has nominated its Finance Minister Magnus Brunner as EU commissioner, following weeks of wrangling within Austria's coalition government over who should get the job. Both Nehammer and Brunner are from the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), which is a member of the European People's Party (EPP), a centre-right group in the European Parliament. In Vienna, the ÖVP and the Gre...

The European Union is worried that a new Hungarian visa rule for foreign workers from Russia and Belarus could endanger EU security, after a leading conservative politician warned the trade bloc about the rule. Hungary has previously operated a special visa regime for foreign workers from Ukraine and Serbia. Budapest expanded the rules in July to eight countries, including visitors from Russia and Belar...
