Robert Towne, who's career spanned some of the biggest classics of the New Hollywood era of filmmaking, has died at the age of 89. His publicist Carri McClure says he died on Monday surrounded by family at his home in Los Angeles. No cause of death has yet been revealed. Roger Corman, the independent filmmaker who was known as the “Spiritual Godfather of the New Hollywood” took Towne under his wing after he took Corman’s acting class, along with other future greats like Jack Nicholson. Towne wrote films for Corman before becoming a script doctor. Warren Beatty had Towne restructure the script ...

The most unbelievable thing about A Quiet Place: Day One is not its premise of world-invading ultrasonic-hearing aliens, but rather that a cat in such a situation wouldn’t have everyone within its vicinity immediately killed by tapping a delicately balanced glass off a table. Cats are - and I say this with nothing but love and admiration - really dumb. It’s why the internet loves videos of them so much. A feline flying through the air at the sight of a pea? They're more hilarious idiots than the evil geniuses Blofeld's cat would have us believe. But what if all this time we’ve been wrong to pi...

I am sitting in one of the most beautiful Piazzas in Italy, Piazza Maggiore in Bologna. On a huge screen, Gene Hackman is walking across Union Square in San Francisco, which by coincidence is almost exactly the same size as the square where I’m sitting. He’s trying to record a conversation between two young lovers. The film is The Conversation, the masterpiece which Coppola sandwiched between the first two Godfathers in 1974. Coppola’s film was also inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow Up (1966), another Italian connection. I can’t think of a better way of watching this 4K restoration, sh...

Most descriptions for Des Teufels Bad (The Devil’s Bath) may inadvertently discourage viewers looking for a clear notion of what they’re about to watch. It’s an unclassifiable and tantalising slow-burn that won’t be everyone’s idea of a carefree time at the cinema. However, to skip it would be a mistake, as it is without a doubt one of the most memorable films you’ll see all year and the highlight of this year’s Berlinale, where it premiered in Competition and won the Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution - awarded to cinematographer Martin Gschlacht for his striking work. Many - inlcudin...

Five minutes into Austrian directing duo Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala (Goodnight Mommy, The Lodge)’s third feature Des Teufels Bad (The Devil’s Bath), you know this period piece is not going to be an easy watch. Upper Austria. 1750. A bleak prologue sees a mother traverse the woods, and head towards a waterfall. There, without batting an eyelid, she throws her screaming infant off the ledge. She then heads to the church, knocks on the door, and turns herself in to the authorities. “I have committed a crime.” She is executed. More precisely, she is decapitated, with her fingers and toes cho...

The union that represents most behind-the-scenes film and television crews in the US has reached a tentative deal with studios for about 50,000 of its members, making another major, production-stopping strike unlikely after a year of labour turmoil in Hollywood. The two sides announced the three-year deal in a joint statement last night (Tuesday 25 June). The union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, said in an email to members, who still must vote to approve the deal, that the agreement includes the pay hikes and artificial intelligence protections they had been vying f...

There are persistent rumours that an upcoming English-language remake of Netflix’s hit show Squid Game is on the way, with David Fincher (Se7en, The Social Network, The Killer) slated to direct. Fincher’s project has writer Dennis Kelly (Utopia, Matilda The Musical) working on the script, and while the pairing of Fincher and the South Korean hit drama looks good on paper - the director having previously dived into remake territory (the US version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and having an unparalleled knack for delving into both physical and psychological violence - some eyebrows are be...
