Finland's parliament passed a law on July 12 granting border guards the authority to block asylum seekers crossing from Russia. This decision followed the arrival of over 1,300 people, prompting Helsinki to close its border. Finland has accused neighboring Russia of weaponizing migration by encouraging migrants from countries like Syria and Somalia to cross the border, an assertion the Kremlin denies. Helsinki believes Moscow is promoting the crossings in retaliation for Finland joining NATO, which supports Ukraine against Russia's unprovoked war. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's right-wing gover...

Finnish lawmakers narrowly approved a controversial bill on Friday which allows border guards to turn away third-country migrants attempting to enter from Russia. The aim of the bill is to introduce temporary measures which curb migrants from entering the Nordic nation, in response to what Helsinki sees as “hybrid warfare” from Russia. Their government says Moscow is funneling undocumented migrants to the border between the two countries to orchestrate an influx of immigration. The law would allow Finnish border guards to reject migrant asylum applications at crossing points under certain circ...

The United States of America, Finland and Canada will come together to produce a fleet of polar icebreakers, the White House announced on Thursday, in what is being seen as a move to counter Russia in the Arctic region. Under the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort or ‘ICE’ Pact, the three countries intend to “strengthen the shipbuilding industry and industrial capacity of each nation – and build closer security and economic ties among our countries through information exchange and mutual workforce-development focused on building polar icebreakers, as well as other Arctic and polar capabilities,” ...

Norway is considering steps to curb real estate sales to Russian nationals — and is looking to a recently implemented Finnish policy for inspiration. Finland's new housing regulations mandate that non-EU and non-EEA foreigners must secure a permit to purchase property within its borders. The policy is designed in part to address concerns that Russians with ties to President Vladimir Putin’s administration have been buying properties in strategic areas. Similar anxieties have surfaced in Norway, where investigative reports have shown Russians connected to the Kremlin acquiring cabins near cruci...

The European Union stands at a critical juncture, confronting the dual crises of escalating climate threats and geopolitical instability. From the devastating impacts of climate change to the recent energy turmoil sparked by Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, the EU’s vulnerabilities are glaring. The European Green Deal, a commitment made by all member states, mandates a rapid decoupling from natural gas. This presents both a daunting challenge and a remarkable opportunity. In the Baltic-Finland region, natural gas consumption varies, with usage rates at 3% in Finland, 6% in Estonia, 16% in Latvi...
