Sharks are known as one of the most powerful - and feared - creatures in our oceans. Now, though, it’s been revealed that a certain species could teach us how to improve heart health. New experimental research presented at the ongoing Society for Experimental Biology conference in Prague shows that muscle metabolic activity may be an important factor in the incredible longevity of the world’s oldest living vertebrate species – the Greenland shark. Scientists believe the findings may be good news for conserving this vulnerable species and for human health. What sharks can teach us about how to ...

With approximately 20 new non-native animals and plants discovered in European waters annually - and a staggering 70% of them found lurking in the Mediterranean - ocean experts are delving into the implications of these aquatic intruders. In the idyllic waters of Madeira, which are home to 70 non-indigenous species, researchers stumbled upon a troubling find just two years ago: a brown algae with the name Rugulopteryx okamurae. João Canning-Clode is the chairman of the Invasive Species Expert Group at ICES, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. He describes this algae disco...

By Liz Kimbrough Dozens of once-pristine rivers and streams in Alaska’s Brooks Range are turning an alarming shade of orange. The discoloration, according to a new study published in the journal Communications Earth and Environment, is likely caused by the thawing of permafrost, which is exposing previously frozen minerals that are now leaching into the waterways. The research team, led by ecologist Jon O’Donnell from the U.S. National Park Service, documented 75 locations across a vast area of northern Alaska where the crystal-clear waters now appear heavily stained. Using satellite imagery a...

By Liz Kimbrough In a glimmer of hope for one of the world’s rarest fish, scientists have counted 191 Devils Hole pupfish this spring in their tiny desert habitat. This number marks the highest spring count for the critically endangered species in more than two decades. The Devils Hole pupfish (Cyprinodon diabolis) is found only in the upper reaches of a single deep limestone cave in the Mojave Desert in the western U.S. state of Nevada. The entire species lives on a shallow rock shelf measuring 3.3 by 4.8 meters (11 by 16 feet), making this the smallest known range of any vertebrate species o...

Ocean temperatures that have gone “crazy haywire” could make the current global coral bleaching the worst in history. It's so bad that scientists are hoping for a few hurricanes as they cool the oceans. More than three-fifths - 62.9% - of the world's coral reefs are badly hurting from a bleaching event that began last year and is continuing. That's nearing the record of 65.7% in 2017, when from 2009 to 2017 about one-seventh of the world's coral died, says Derek Manzello, coordinator of the US's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coral Reef Watch Program. When water gets to...

Climate change is putting countless marine animals under pressure but jellyfish could actually benefit from warming ocean waters. A study by researchers at Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) looked at eight different species of Arctic jellyfish. They exposed them to rising water temperatures, sea ice retreat and other changing environmental conditions through computer models. Scientists found that by the second half of the century, seven of the eight species could expand their habitat polewards under these conditions. Simulations showed that the lion’s mane jellyfish - one of the biggest...

The number of fish on the US government's overfishing list sunk to a new low last year in a sign of healthy fisheries, federal officials said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released an updated analysis of American fisheries late last week via its annual 'Status of the Stocks' report, which provides an assessment of the populations of the seafood species fishermen catch and customers buy. The report states that 94 per cent of fish stocks are not subject to overfishing, which is slightly better than a year ago. The US was able to remove several important fish stocks ...
