Last June, France formally introduced a ban on domestic short-haul flights in an effort to bring down carbon emissions. In theory, the regulation prohibits flights where a rail alternative under 2.5 hours exists. Critics at the time said it didn’t go quite far enough, targeting very few routes and not including connecting flights. The aviation industry has fought back claiming the regulation is unfair. So, just over a year after it was introduced, what impact has France’s short-haul domestic flight ban had so far? Has France’s domestic flight ban cut emissions? Before the ban’s introduction, th...

Lufthansa is adding an environmental charge to its ticket prices. The German airline group says the funds are needed to comply with EU regulations on reducing emissions. A fee of up to €72 will be added to fares to offset the cost of introducing sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) and other carbon-cutting initiatives, the group says. The fee will come in on flights from 1 January 2025. Lufthansa is one of the first in Europe to introduce a fee like this but it could be a sign of things to come from other airlines. Which flights will the environmental charge be added to?Airlines have warned for y...

The fine involves a “significant number” of flights from December 2021 to August 2022 that passed over Iraq on their way between the United States and the United Arab Emirates. UAE-based Emirates was fined in 2020 for similar flights and agreed not to repeat the same violation. JetBlue and Emirates had an arrangement called code-sharing in which the New York-based carrier sold seats on Emirates flights as if they were its own planes. The United States lets foreign airlines operate flights sold under the name or code of a US airline if they obey Federal Aviation Administration restrictions when...

Singapore Airlines said on Tuesday it has offered compensation to passengers of a flight that hit extreme turbulence last month, in a rare case that killed one passenger and injured dozens. The Boeing 777 jet, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew from London to Singapore, ran into sudden turbulence over the Irrawaddy basin on 20 May, hurling people and items around the cabin. The plane diverted to Thailand. A 73-year-old British man died of a suspected heart attack and dozens were hospitalised including those with spinal, brain and bone or organ damages. Nineteen people remained hospitalised in...

EU travel rules are being introduced that will mean passengers from outside the bloc have to pass through a new automated system. Known as the Entry/Exit System or EES, it will replace the stamping of passports for non-EU travellers who don’t require a visa. These checks will use biometric data including fingerprints, facial scans and passport information, which will be taken the first time you enter an EU country after the system is introduced. After numerous setbacks, it is due to be introduced in autumn this year. But airlines have warned that the launch is likely to have a major impact on ...

Severe turbulence that hit a Singapore Airlines flight from London has resulted in one death and several injuries. What happened on board the Boeing 777-300ER flight to Singapore is still not clear. Airline tracking websites have noted that the aircraft dropped around 1,800 metres in three minutes when it flew into the rough air beyond the Bay of Bengal. Fatalities and serious injuries from turbulence happen rarely. Flight crews can often predict bad weather and rough air in advance and are trained to deal with the effects. How dangerous is turbulence on a flight?“Injuries from severe turbulen...

Holidaymakers may face disruption to their summer getaway plans because of possible flight cancellations. This is mainly because of the safety incidents at Boeing earlier this year which have made it much more difficult for several airlines to procure enough aircraft for the Summer season. Some may be faced with no other choice than to cancel some flights or offer a reduced service on some routes. Back in January this year, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 MAX aircraft saw a mid-cabin exit door panel blow out in mid-air, just a few minutes after take-off. This incident sparked a flurry of inves...
