By Maxwell Radwin Mexico has pledged to more than double its clean energy output by 2030, investing in solar and wind power while transitioning away from fossil fuels. Yet the country continues to lag behind on its renewable energy targets, producing just 12% of its power from clean sources last year, watchdogs have found. At the same time, the country continues to subsidize the struggling state-owned oil company Pemex while beefing up its oil and natural gas infrastructure with new refineries and massive, transnational pipelines. The projects worry environmentalists not only because of climat...

The United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres issued an urgent call to action after the world experienced its hottest day on record on Monday. He said "This past Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were the three hottest days on record. But let’s face facts: extreme temperatures are no longer a one-day, one-week or one-month phenomenon. If there is one thing that unites our divided world, it’s that we’re all increasingly feeling the heat. Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere". The World Meteorological Organization, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, ...

By Hans Nicholas Jong JAKARTA — Civil society organizations in Indonesia are getting a boost to ensure their participation in the country’s clean energy transition and land stewardship, amid an increasingly hostile climate for groups advocating for environmental and social rights. Four new projects launched June 27 by the European Union delegation to Indonesia are designed to strengthen CSO capacity and participation in the fields of land-use governance and the energy transition; support for Indigenous peoples and local communities; gender equality and youth empowerment; and human rights monit...

Melting ice caps may have a bigger influence on the length of a day than previously thought, new research has found. This human-caused consequence of climate change is slowing the speed at which the Earth rotates, increasing the length of a day. It amounts to just a few milliseconds but it could have significant impacts in our modern, high-tech world as many of the computer systems we use every day rely on very precise atomic clocks. And, researchers say, it shows climate change could have a much bigger impact on the Earth’s spin than initially thought. How are melting ice caps making days lon...

Weather alerts, forest fires, melting pavement in cities: A deadly heatwave has sent temperatures in parts of central and southern Europe soaring toward 40 degrees Celsius. From Italy to Romania, authorities warned people to be cautious, drink plenty of water and avoid going outside during the hottest hours of the day. Italian authorities declared a red weather alert in seven cities on Thursday, mostly in the central parts of the country but also the capital Rome and Trieste in the northeast. The heat conditions are aggravated by humidity and could affect healthy people as well as those with h...

Canada's historic wildfires last year pumped more heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the air than India did by burning fossil fuels. Put another way, the fire spewed nearly four times the carbon emissions as flights do in a year. This is the same amount of carbon dioxide that 647 million cars put in the air in a year, based on US EPA data. The new data lays bare the vicious circle of wildfires - they are becoming more frequent due to global warming which is caused by burning fossil fuels which produces emissions. Forests remove a lot of emissions from the atmosphere so when they burn down they ...

Cloud modifying techniques used to cool the climate in California could eventually push heatwaves towards Europe, according to a new study. If global warming reaches 2C above pre-industrial by 2050, cloud modification could majorly warm almost all of Europe except the Iberian Peninsula. The research showed the biggest increases in Scandinavia, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. The study’s authors say their findings are concerning because there are next to no regulations in place for this kind of local climate modification and the consequences could be hard to predict. “Our study provides the ...

Just Stop Oil is keeping busy. Just one day after targeting renowned prehistoric UNESCO World Heritage Site Stonehenge, two demonstrators from the British environmental activist group, named by the group as Jennifer Kowalski, 28, and Cole Macdonald, 22, are said to have broken into a VIP private airfield at Stansted airport this morning. The pair attempted to target Taylor Swift’s jet, as the pop star is scheduled to perform at Wembley Stadium on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week, as part of her worldwide Eras Tour. Unable to find the plane, they instead painted two other jets using fire e...

Heatwaves have hit Europe earlier than ever this year, with Greece, Cyprus, Türkiye and Italy already hit by extreme heat, with some places seeing temperatures 10C above the seasonal average. The risk of heatwaves at the Paris Olympic Games has left organisers sweating about the safety of athletes. Spain is bracing itself for another blistering summer, releasing a new map to help with more accurate heatwave predictions. Cities across the continent are preparing with adaptations for extreme heat. We’ve now had 11 record-breaking months of heat in a row and sea surface temperatures in the North ...

The storm, which struck Monday, caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure. Disaster teams are assessing the damage and providing relief, with displaced residents sheltered in government buildings. The South African Weather Service confirmed two tornadoes struck the region, causing widespread destruction. The province, historically prone to extreme weather, faced similar devastation in 2022 with over 300 deaths due to severe flooding.
