Three years ago, Google set an ambitious plan to address climate change by going 'net zero', meaning it would release no more climate-changing gases into the air than it removes, by 2030. But a report from the company on Tuesday shows it is nowhere near meeting that goal. Rather than declining, its emissions grew 13 per cent in 2023 over the year before. Compared to its baseline year of 2019, emissions have soared 48 per cent. Google cited artificial intelligence (AI) and the demand it puts on data centres, which require massive amounts of electricity, for last year’s growth. Making that elect...

Google has announced that 110 languages have been added to its Translate feature, including several endangered European ones. About a quarter of the new languages come from Africa, the company said, with all the new languages representing more than 614 million speakers. You can now send a work email in Manx, the Celtic language of the Isle of Man that "almost went extinct with the death of its last native speaker in 1974," the company said in a post on its blog. Regional languages from France, including Breton - a Celtic language spoken in Brittany - and Occitan, which is spoken in the country...

Google’s new search feature, AI Overviews, is facing mounting backlash after users pointed out some factually inaccurate and misleading answers to queries. AI Overview, which was launched two weeks ago, shows a summary of answers to common questions on Google Search at the top of the page that it gets from various sources around the Internet. The goal of the new feature is to help users answer “more complex questions,” according to a Google blog post. Instead, it has produced false answers like telling a user to glue cheese to pizza if it gets unstuck, to eat rocks to help with your health, or...

Google will develop a data centre and cloud hub in Malaysia as part of a $2 billion (€1.8 billion) investment. The move comes after a similar announcement from Microsoft which said it would invest $2.2 billion (€2 billion) over the next four years to build new cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Malaysia. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hailed the investment as a sign of faith in Malaysia’s governance and economy. The investment is estimated to contribute $3.2 billion (€2.9 billion) to the country's GDP and create some 26,500 jobs by 2030. Google said in a statement that the ...

Google unveiled a new feature this month in the US that includes artificial intelligence (AI) generated summaries at the top of its search engine. But already, some have pointed out errors in the information included in the new "AI Overviews". “Yes, astronauts have met cats on the moon, played with them, and provided care," said Google's search engine in response to a query by an AP reporter. "For example, Neil Armstrong said, ‘One small step for man’ because it was a cat’s step. Buzz Aldrin also deployed cats on the Apollo 11 mission," the summary added. None of this is true, but similar erro...

This week was all about artificial intelligence (AI) competitors showing off their might with OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind trying to trump the other. But the impressive updates show how the technology is being rolled out quickly, living up to previously voiced fears penned in an open letter that AI could harm society and should be put on pause until it is better understood. OpenAI’s co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who was known to question Sam Altman’s ambition to deploy AI quickly, announced on Wednesday he was leaving the start-up. On Monday, OpenAI held its first-ever live se...

Google will roll out artificial intelligence (AI) generated summaries at the top of its search engine for users in the US. The "AI overviews" will appear when the technology determines it's the fastest way to answer a user. Google began testing the AI-generated summaries a year ago but is now making it part of its US search results before rolling out the feature to other countries. People will likely still see Google's traditional website links and advertisements for simple searches such as store recommendations or weather forecasts. "We’re encouraged to see not only an increase in Search usag...

If an “[Item] Found Moving With You” alert pops up on your phone with a ping, there’s an unknown device tracking your every move. That’s the latest change that Apple and Google are putting in place to prevent the misuse of devices that help you keep track of your belongings. The alert means that someone else’s Air Tag, Find My accessory or any other Bluetooth tracker is moving along with them. Along with this new alert, phones will now be able to see the tracker’s identifier and get instructions on how to disable it. “AirTag and third-party Find My network accessories were designed from the be...

Anthropic’s artificial intelligence (AI) assistant is now available in Europe but the company’s model, which aims to make AI chatbots accessible to all, arrived on the continent just hours after its Microsoft-backed rival ChatGPT released its latest version. Anthropic bills itself as an AI safety research company and was founded by former OpenAI executives and researchers. Google and Amazon are also major Anthropic investors.
