Shell has sold millions of ‘phantom’ carbon credits based on emissions savings that never happened, according to a new investigation. The fossil fuel giant made more than $200 million Canadian dollars (€135 million) selling the credits from its flagship carbon capture facility to Canada’s biggest oil sands companies. But a two-for-one deal struck with the Government of Alberta meant that Shell was selling credits for two tonnes of CO₂ for every one tonne that it actually captured. Greenpeace Canada’s new ‘Selling Hot Air’ report explains how this legal but climate-wrecking operation worked. He...

Scientists have discovered what could be the first known smooth hammerhead shark nursery in the Galápagos. The vulnerable shark species - so-called for its elongated head which forms a straighter curve than the scalloped hammerhead - is rarely spotted in the marine reserve. But after observing several young pups in a small bay at Isabela Island, the Greenpeace expedition team believe they have found a breeding ground in the archipelago - and they’re rightly excited. “This is an amazing discovery!” says lead scientist Alex Hearn from Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador and marine cons...

The government has urged employers of outdoor workers to develop their own rules to prevent heatstroke after rolling out revisions to an official warning system that was slammed as ineffective and disruptive when introduced last year. The adjustments were made after stakeholders aired views to the Labour Department, Deputy Commissioner for Occupational Safety and Health Vincent Fung told RTHK on Friday. The pilot scheme was not originally due for review for two years. The Labour Department launched the revisions on Thursday to minimise situations in which a heat warning is cancelled and then r...

Governments aren’t doing enough to protect the world’s oceans and need to make major commitments at an important conference taking place in Athens, Greece, this week, according to Greenpeace. "The elections are coming" an activist cheerily reminds an older woman passing by as she hands her a leaflet. It's a balmy spring day in Brussels and the city's Extinction Rebellion branch is staging a protest at Place Jean Rey, a stone's throw away from the European Parliament. In less than two months over 400 million people will have the opportunity to go to the polls and decide who will fill that parliament. The 100 or so demonstrators block a road under the watchful eye of multiple police officers. “Our demand is to stop fossil [fuel] subsidies immediately, as the least that Europe can do ...
