Pope Francis said global democracy was “not in good health” as he encouraged Catholics to work for peace in Ukraine, Palestine and other conflict zones. His comments came during a visit to the northern Italian city of Trieste on Sunday which marked the 50th Social Week of Italian Catholics – this year addressing the theme of democracy in crisis. As part of the trip, he went to the Generali Convention Centre where the leader of the Catholic Church addressed the state of global democracy and its functionality. “Let’s be honest, in today’s world democracy is not in good health,” Francis said. “I ...

Catania Airport was closed on Friday because of the potential risks from ash in the atmosphere from Mount Etna. One of Europe's most active volcanoes, Etna began erupting on Tuesday sending lava flows down the 3,320-metre high cone on the Italian island of Sicily. "The runway at Catania Airport is unusable due to the volcanic ash fall. Both arrivals and departures are suspended," the airport said in a statement. Flights resumed at around 3pm local time, although some restrictions in services remained in place. In Catania, Mayor Enrico Trantino issued an order on Friday banning two-wheeled vehi...

A lack of clarity concerning their respective past has prevented the French and Italian far-right parties from being fully perceived by public opinion as ordinary, mainstream political forces. Despite their relative electoral success, unresolved issues from their histories seem to be casting a shadow over their contemporary iteration. Anti-semitic leftovers are still present among their more extreme supporters, making it hard for their leadership to be fully integrated into the national and European establishment. Is National Rally truly pro-Israel?Marine Le Pen's National Rally (RN) is expect...

A hot start to summer in Europe along with escalating overtourism protests have brought sustainable travel into focus. Chocolate giant Fererro is launching a vegan version of the popular Nutella spread to go on sale in supermarkets in Italy this autumn. Nutella's origins can be traced back to World War II when cocoa was limited and expensive. As a result, chocolate makers searched for new ways to produce their products using ingredients such as hazelnuts. Nutella's own journey began in 1964 with the sale of its first jar of the hazelnut spread in Piedmont, Italy. The company's iconic logo appeared on the worldwide stage the following year, with sales expanding from Italy to Germany, France, and Australia. Toda...

Last week Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni blocked the EU job nomination package, including abstaining from on Ursula Von Der Leyen as a candidate for re-election as EU Commission President. She argued the deal had problems of both “method and merit”. Before the Italian parliament, she said it was “undemocratic” because it didn’t take into account the people’s vote. With the double “no” to Kallas and Costa, questions are being asked in Brussels and in Rome if Italy will be isolated. Some analysts say it’s just a way for the Italian leader to buy more time. With only a couple of weeks to g...
