The basketball rivalry between Kentucky and Louisville has lacked some spark in recent seasons. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 39-17. The Big Blue has won the last two meetings by a combined 52 points. But things could change with Pat Kelsey at Louisville and Mark Pope at Kentucky. Both coaches have been cordial to this point, but by the time that first meeting rolls around on Dec. 14, the rivalry juices could be flowing. Kelsey not being afraid to do seemingly anything for good PR certainly makes him easy to poke fun of. We’ve seen the new head coach tell a St. Peter joke during his in...

The Oklahoma City Thunder just announced the free agent rights for former Kentucky player Olivier Sarr, per Keith Smith of Spotrac. In order for the Thunder to complete the signing of Isaiah Hartenstein, it renounced the free agency of five players, including Sarr. Bismack Biyombo, Gordon Hayward, Keyontae Johnson, and Mike Muscala were also among the five. Sarr, a former forward at Kentucky, spent one season as a Wildcat. In Lexington, the ACC transfer averaged 10.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in all 25 games of the 2020-21 season. In fact, he was the only player to start in all 25 games. Sarr ha...

You haven’t seen Mikhail McLean in Lexington much since taking the fifth and final assistant coaching spot on Mark Pope’s staff at Kentucky back on June 14. And there’s a pretty darn good reason for that, his extended absence happily excused as he looks to make history with the Bahamas. McLean, the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for the Bahamas National Team, is currently in Valencia, Spain coaching in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. There, the Bahamas are now just one win away from punching a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics following a victory over Lebanon in the event se...

The rain is finally out of the forecast after a wet couple of days in Kentucky, so the holiday can now be properly celebrated outside by some body of water with a grill nearby. It’s a judgment-free zone over here. Meanwhile, we’re gonna keep on keeping on at KSR HQ, looking to bring you news in the most ridiculous manner possible. It’s what we do and what we love. I mean, where else can you read about David Spade channeling his inner Joe Dirt in Kentucky while also...

Mark Pope spent America’s birthday outside of America. On Thursday morning, Kentucky‘s head basketball coach shared a photo from London, England, part of his travels across the globe to Istanbul, Turkey, where he is recruiting for the future of the Wildcats. Why Istanbul? Because Istanbul’s Sinan Erdem Dome is home to the 2024 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup. Today, the United States U17 team beat Canada, 111-60, in the quarterfinals to advance to Saturday’s semifinal round. AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 player in the class, led Team USA with 18 points. Cameron and Cayden Boozer, Koa Peat, and Chris Ce...

In case you needed a reminder that fireworks are dangerous, here’s one from Eastern Kentucky involving a name you might know. Reggie Cottrell, a rising junior who was one of the stars of Harlan County’s Sweet 16 run, injured his hand yesterday at a July 4th party. According to his sister Lexie on Facebook, Cottrell was attempting to light a firework when it suddenly blew up. He was flown to UK Hospital in Lexington where surgeons amputated his pointer finger and parts of his middle and index fingers. They also put a metal wire into his thumb, which was broken. “I appreciate everyone’s love and...

After his introductory press conference with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Rob Dillinghamcaught his first Minnesota Twins game in his new hometown, Minneapolis. The eighth overall pick in the NBA Draft, Dillingham walked from the Wolves’ Target Center across the street to the Twins’ Target Field, where he and fellow rookie Terrence Shannon Jr. received the VIP treatment, including the honor of throwing out the first pitch. Though a little low, Dillingham hit his mark down the middle, dodging any bloopers or #NotTop10 attention. His pitch looked even better against Shannon’s one-hopper in the dir...

Kellan Grady has a new home overseas. The former Cat just signed a one-year deal with MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in the German Bundesliga league. The move comes after Grady’s first season abroad, which he spent with Chorale Roanne Basket in France. Grady averaged 8.4 points and 1.9 assists per game with Chorale Roanne, shooting 45.4% from the field and 29.2% from the outside in 25.6 minutes per game. Prior to that, he signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Denver Nuggets following his graduate season at Kentucky and played for the Grand Rapids Gold, their G-League affiliate, for a year. Before settlin...

Mark Pope will have the benefit in his first season as Kentucky’s coach as the program is in a bit of a muddy state. John Calipari’s tenure didn’t end so well and Pope’s roster is a bit of an unknown in how the guys will mesh. I think that will ultimately benefit Pope because expectations will be mixed in Year 1 for him. I don’t see a mass revolt against him should the Cats lose a few games in the early part of the year. Some coaches didn’t have that benefit. And some have come into a rebuilding program. But Pope will still be expected to perform at some kind of level in Year 1. So I thought i...
