Migration, security and energy cooperation may be the official items on the agenda for leaders from about 45 European nations to discuss at a summit in England on Thursday but EU-UK relations, the war in Ukraine and the upcoming elections in the US are likely to dominate talks. Leaders will convene in Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill near Oxford in southern England, for the fourth summit of the European Political Community (EPC). The forum, launched in 2022, has delivered no tangible results so far, and this one is unlikely to buck the trend. One of the biggest beneficiarie...

As the UK gears up for an election likely to trigger a change in government for the first time in 14 years, the Conservatives' plan to deport asylum seekers to the eastern African country of Rwanda looks set to grind to a halt. The policy, first announced in April 2022 as a response to the growing number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats, has been deemed unlawful by the UK's Supreme Court. But Prime Minister Rishi Sunak circumvented legal hurdles by pushing through a bill in April deeming Rwanda to be a safe country. Sunak has said flights removing asylum seekers to Rwand...

A UK Border Force boat has rescued at least 85 migrants off the coast of Kent. The migrants, including young children, were attempting to cross the Channel on dinghies. It is the latest in a string of Border Force rescues as recent UK government figures show more than 10,000 migrants have arrived in the UK by small boats this year. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has long promised to "stop the boats" arriving across the channel, many of them carrying people seeking asylum. Among the initiatives meant to change the situation is outreach to the government of Albania, whose help is needed to crack dow...

With 500 million citizens starting to vote in the European elections tomorrow (Thursday, 6 June), Radio Schuman sat down with Fabrice Leggeri, the former Executive Director of the EU border agency Frontex. Leggeri moved from being a top EU official to a far-right candidate for the French party led by Marine Le Pen Rassemblement National (National Rally). As third in the list, Leggeri will be likely elected as a member of the European Parliament. He resigned from Frontex in April 2022 after an investigation from the EU Anti-Fraud Office (Olaf) found evidence of his involvement on pushbacks of m...

It was still dark and quiet outside when Ousmane Sylla had his last prayer in the courtyard of an Italian migrant jail. A few moments later, the silence of dawn was shattered. Chaos took over the detention and deportation centre of Ponte Galeria on the outskirts of Rome. The 21-year-old Guinean had been found dead in an apparent suicide. Fellow detainees who discovered his body screamed for help and frantically tried to resuscitate him. When paramedics finally arrived, Sylla was gone. Enraged by his death, migrants set mattresses on fire, broke down doors and threw stones at security forces in...

Only two of the European Parliaments seven political parties explicitly call for the swift adoption of a stalled directive to combat discrimination ahead of European elections despite NGOs warning of increased racism. Euronews looked at the manifestos of the main political parties vying for some of the 720 seats up for grabs in the European Parliament following the June 6-9 EU-wide election and found that only the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and the Left clearly promised to press for the adoption of the directive. The European People's Party (EPP), Renew Europe and the Greens/EFA make refer...

A payment card exclusively for asylum-seekers has been introduced in Germany, following the recent parliamentary approval of a new rule. Under the new regulation, migrants are issued a card to access their benefits, which can be used at local stores and for services, but it limits their cash withdrawals and bans international money transfers. The aim is to prevent migrants from sending money to family and friends abroad, or to smugglers. In Eichsfeld, Thuringia, 45-year-old Laca from Albania and her family were among the first in Germany to receive half of their government benefits as cashless...
