Eddie Murphy fought to keep a reference to the iconic banana exhaust pipe joke from Beverly Hills Copout of his new movie. The 63-year-old actor was more than happy to reprise his role as Axel Foley inBeverly Hills Cop: Axel F but was disappointed to learn the production team wanted to include a reference to the scene from the original 1984 flick where his character foils pursuing police officers by putting a banana in their car’s exhaust pipe. During a roundtable discussion with his co-stars for Netflix, the comedian said: “I fought to make sure there would be no banana in the tailpipe, up un...

If you look back on the original X-Men movie now, it does seem fairly dated. And the thing is now almost 25 years old, so that’s not totally shocking. At the time, it looked cutting-edge and almost daring in its willingness to throw a Marvel comic up on the screen. Compared with modern superhero movies now, though, it is distinctly lacking in color, and in comics-accurate costumes and details. The X-Men don’t wear anything approximating their comic-book uniforms; instead, they’re draped in matching black leather, a look they continued through the next two sequels. Which makes sense when you re...

Since the beginning of film, there have been disaster movies. Early silent movies were filled with floods, fires, and assorted cinematic calamities. In the 1970s, the remarkable success of Airport kicked off a decade of disasters; earthquakes, towering infernos, additional airports, Poseidon adventures, oh my. After a fallow period, they came roaring back in the ’90s, with aliens blowing up the White House, competing killer asteroid and volcano films, plus loads of twisters — or technically just one Twister. (Twisterswouldn’t arrive in theaters for another 30 years or so.) Most genres go throu...

Despite a five-year gap between movies, Descendants remains a big draw for Disney. The newest film, Descendants: The Rise of Red, debuted on the Disney+ streaming service over the weekend, and quickly became one of the most-viewed original films in its history. According to Deadline, The Rise of Red had 6.7 million views in its first three days of availability, making it “Disney Branded Television’s most-viewed DCOM premiere ever on the streamer, according to Disney.” They note that while “this is a fairly big number for any Disney+ release” it can be hard to compare it to other films, because...

The latest Deadpool & Wolverine trailer makes it look like the film features a multiverse of madness (minus Doctor Strange). Although the new clip is short, and provides only fleeting glimpses of them, it does pretty much confirm that you are going to get to see some version of the Deadpool Corps in the film. The Deadpool Corps, for those who don’t obsessively follow Marvel Comics, is a whole team comprised of alternate versions of the O.G. Deadpool. In addition to him, there was also Dogpool (who’s been featured prominently in other trailers for the film), Headpool (which was the severed zomb...

With The Killer, director John Woo joins a very exclusive club: Directors Who Have Directed Remakes of Their Own Work. The new version of The Killer is, according to the press release, a “radical reimagining” of Woo’s own landmark 1989 action film The Killer. And if it seems like it’s beneath a filmmaker of Woo’s stature to remake himself, hey: Alfred Hitchcock did it (with The Man Who Knew Too Much). And if it was good enough for Hitchcock, well, it’s good enough for pretty much anyone. The original film starred Chow Yun-fat and Danny Lee as an assassin and a cop who wind up reluctantly worki...

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory stars Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen have joined a new musical parody. The two actors — who played Veruca Salt and Mike Teavee respectively alongside Gene Wilder in the original 1971 movie — will take part in a live stage reading of Willy’s Candy Spectacular, which is inspired by the disastrous “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” event in Glasgow earlier this year. The upcoming musical parody will perform live stage readings at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with the former child stars each stepping in as narrators. Cole will be part of the cast from...

For decades, I’ve heard moviegoers dismiss blockbusters as nothing more than excuses for elaborate visual effects. Most of the time, that’s hyperbole. In the case of Twister, it is 100 percent true. As detailed in this 2020 feature in The Ringer, Twister did not begin its life as a story about daredevil storm chasers. Director Jan de Bont didn’t grow up as a boy in Netherlands dreaming of the day when he could capture the majesty and terror of tornados onscreen. The whole film started when Steven Spielberg wondered in the mid-1990s if computer effects had progressed to the point that they coul...
