It was billed as the “greenest [Games] in Olympic history” \- but the sustainability dreams of Paris 2024 are melting away as organisers order 2,500 air-conditioning units. Originally designed without air-con, the eco-friendly Paris Olympic Village includes a geothermal cooling system that pumps cold water from deep beneath the ground to keep indoor temps at least 6°C lower than outside. “I want the Paris Games to be exemplary from an environmental point of view,” said Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo last year. But after pushback from Olympic delegations, Paris organisers are now allowing countries t...

Expecting a record-breaking summer, the hotel industry in Paris is becoming concerned as it experiences low occupancy rates ahead of the summer Olympic Games. With barely four weeks to go until the Olympic Games, observers say tourists seem to be turning their backs on the capital. Occupancy rates are down by almost 25% compared to previous years, according to some polls. For the Ze Hotel at the foot of Montmartre, June has been nothing like the previous months. The hotel is only half-full, compared with at least 80% in recent years. "I think the Olympic Games effect is counter-productive sinc...

France is increasing security measures in preparation for the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics next month. Military helicopters will be patrolling the city and protecting airspace on the day of the ambitious July 26 ceremony – which is proving to be a serious security challenge. On the day of the event, around 200 Olympic delegations will join the parade on more than 80 boats. They will make the journey on a six-kilometer route, which has become a major talking point not only for its unique status as an open-air event, but for its exposure to potential danger. Parisien police chief Laure...

It’s a beautiful day for it. The sun bounces off the white squares of the picnic cloth which runs from the Arc de Triomphe to Avenue George V. Traffic lights are still turning from red to green, conducting no one. Elodie and her partner are among 4,000 lucky ticket-holders to the free grand pique-nique des Champs-Élysées held on 26 May. Of all the decisions Paris Olympics organisers made about where to hold each sport, sending surfing competitions to the other side of the world - in the Pacific waters of Tahiti - provoked the strongest reactions. Tahitians and others railed against the building of a new viewing tower on Teahupo’o reef because of fears it would hurt marine life. But organisers say it wasn’t just the world-class waves that lured them to the French territory 16,000 kilometers away. Paris Olympic officials had set an ambitious target of halving their overall carbon footprint compared with the 2012 London and 2016...
