The garden is a star attraction at the annual Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, the mischievous little sibling of the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show. Over the years Hampton has earned an international reputation for experimentation and cutting-edge design with a twist. Other gardens jockeying for prominence at the Festival include the Lion King Anniversar...

Trade bodies representing garden centres in the UK and the EU have signed an open letter calling upon political leaders to tackle a post-Brexit border "crisis". They claim that new changes to import procedures, applied in April, are causing delays, damage, and extra costs for those bringing plants into the UK. "The UK has a unique border with the EU in terms of trading plants and plant products," said the letter. "Nowhere else in the world is there a border that sees such a volume of plants and plant products traded between countries that do not have a form of sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) ...

Los Angeles (AFP) - In an industrial wasteland in Los Angeles, Kreigh Hampel is uprooting California buckwheat with a pitchfork to find out how much lead it has absorbed. The plant's delicate white and pink flowers belie an astonishing cleaning power, which scientists think could be harnessed to get rid of dangerous pollutants -- and even recycle them. "That's the miracle of life," enthuses 68-year-old Hampel, who is volunteering on the project. "Plants really can do this work and they know how to do it, they've done it so many times over millions of years," he says. The experiment is part of ...

The plant, which grows in bud-like circles and resembles an artichoke, is native to the rugged coastlines of Oregon and northern California. It is popular in East Asia, where it is used for decoration. A court in Los Angeles heard how Kim and his accomplices swiped thousands of the succulents from several s...
