Three years ago, Google set an ambitious plan to address climate change by going 'net zero', meaning it would release no more climate-changing gases into the air than it removes, by 2030. But a report from the company on Tuesday shows it is nowhere near meeting that goal. Rather than declining, its emissions grew 13 per cent in 2023 over the year before. Compared to its baseline year of 2019, emissions have soared 48 per cent. Google cited artificial intelligence (AI) and the demand it puts on data centres, which require massive amounts of electricity, for last year’s growth. Making that elect...

One method of making electricity cleanly to address climate change has been quietly advancing and on Tuesday it hit a milestone. A California utility is backing the largest new geothermal power development in the US - 400 megawatts of clean electricity from the Earth’s heat - enough for some 400,000 homes. Utility company Southern California Edison will purchase the electricity from Fervo Energy, a Houston-based geothermal company, Fervo announced. The company is drilling up to 125 wells in southwest Utah. Clean electricity like this reduces the need for traditional power plants that cause cli...

Ukraine could install five times more solar energy capacity than the government’s current plan, according to a new study. Greenpeace campaigners are calling for the embattled country to adopt a ‘Solar Energy Marshall Plan’ - in reference to the US-funded programme that helped Europe rebuild after the Second World War. The study they commissioned from economic consultancy firm Berlin Economics is released today ahead of the Ukraine Recovery Conference taking place in Berlin next week. “Addressing the energy crisis must be at the heart of the Ukraine Recovery Conference,” says Andree Böhling, en...

A powerful tornado has swept through a wind farm in the United States, leaving a trail of crumpled power-producing towers in its wake. Five wind turbines were destroyed by the freak weather event, with one bursting into flames. Video of the direct hit on the wind farm near Greenfield, Iowa, show the violent twister ripping through the countryside, uprooting trees, damaging buildings and sending dirt and debris high into the air. Several of the turbines at MidAmerican Energy Company's Orient wind farm recorded wind speeds of more than 100 mph as the tornadoes approached just before the turbines...

Eurostar has promised to power its trains with 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030. The plan was laid out in the company’s first sustainability report, released on Tuesday. It details plans to reduce energy use, source renewable power, minimise waste and promote train travel as a greener alternative to flying. How will Eurostar run on 100% renewables?Eurostar CEO Gwendoline Cazenave says the goal to switch to renewables by the end of the decade is “a deliberately ambitious target” aimed at “[accelerating] change across the sector”. It is seeking regulatory support for the rapid deployment of...

Renewable energy production is rapidly increasing all over Greece. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his conservative government have pledged to accelerate clean energy technologies to cover 80 per cent of the country's total energy production by 2030. At present the level is less than 30 per cent. Ágios Geórgios, a weather-beaten rock in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Athens, boasts 23 wind turbines which generate enough electricity to power more than 40,000 households back on the mainland. The government has announced plans to build an additional 1,150 turbines on Greek islands...
