The British-born artist Anthony McCall is very much in the spotlight this month at London's Tate Modern. Doors have opened on his first major exhibit at the gallery in which McCall projects beams of intense light through spaces filled with fine mist to create interactive sculptures that can be manipulated by visitors. His career began as a filmmaker but was inspired by beams of light from cinema projectors. McCall has lived in New York since the 1970s and it was there he began exploring sculpting light. Meet the artist creating life-size sculptures of endangered animals from cardboard The mist...

Now in its ninth edition, the Biennale Gherdëina is showcasing over 30 artists and collectives – bringing new commissions, existing artworks and performances into dialogue with the spectacular UNESCO-protected Dolomites – as well as the rich Ladin folklore and culture that inhabits it. Curated by Italian historian and art curator Lorenzo Giusti, with Marta Papini as assistant curator, 2024’s exhibition takes as its theme ‘The Parliament of Marmots’. This title borrows from a local Ladin myth about the Fanes – the legendary founding population of the Ladins, who were prosperous because of their...

With a tender kiss, George Orwell’s son made a quiet gesture to his father: in a way, the writer had finally come home. When Orwell fought on the Republican side in the Spanish civil war, his division was poised to take the eastern city of Huesca. Confident of victory over the Nationalists, the generals promised the troops they would be drinking coffee in the city the next day, but it never came to pass. Now, almost 90 years after the writer of Homage to Catalonia nearly lost his life in the 1936-1939 war, his son Richard Blair has finally realised his father’s wish to make it to Huesca – symb...

The grounds of the Fondation Carmignac are a unique mix of art and nature. Situated on the southern French island of Porquerolles, it’s home to some amazing sculptures celebrating the feminine form. Now, within the walls of its Villa, women are the centrepiece of its latest exhibition. Curated by Alona Pardo, ‘The Infinite Woman’ combines works from the Carmignac collection with the work of more than 60 pioneering artists. From the past to the present and the future, visions of myths and magic are mixed with complex or surreal depictions of sorcery and sexuality. But that's not all by any mean...
