Platform 1 at Paddington Station is not usually a place I find myself at 11pm on a Monday night, but I’m here with good reason. I am about to catch Great Western Railway’s Night Riviera Sleeper from London to Penzance in Cornwall at the very tip of the UK’s southwest peninsula. I’ve been visiting Cornwall since before I could walk. I’ve taken the ordinary train, the coach and braved the summer getaway traffic jam chaos by car more times than I can count. But I’d never even considered taking a sleeper train as an option until now. Turns out this was a major mistake. A scenic sunrise and superb ...

Tourists are bucking the traditional summer norms and holidaying in cooler countries this year. More and more tourists from central and southern Europe, where summer temperatures can reach as high as 30 or even 40C, are heading to Umeå in Sweden. With its 17C July weather, peaceful and quiet atmosphere and absence of traffic jams, Umeå is proving to be a very popular tourist destination, with tourists arriving in troves. Camping manager Charlotte Nillson noticed that an increasing number of people from Finland were making it to Luleå's largest camping site. She believes the explanation is the ...

A hot start to summer in Europe along with escalating overtourism protests have brought sustainable travel into focus. Italy has been particularly hard hit with excessive heat and overcrowding in popular destinations like Venice and Lake Como. According to UN Tourism, Italy hosted more than 63 million international tourists in 2019, making it one of the most visited countries on the planet. Tourism accounts for about 13 per cent of Italy’s GDP, a not insignificant chunk of the country’s national economy. As awareness grows, many tourists are focusing on how they can have a positive impact on t...

The river cruise market is experiencing major growth. In 2024, the global river cruise market is projected to reach...

If you’re a regular visitor to Tenerife, you’re probably aware of one of the destination’s few downsides: the slightly lacking public transport system. The government recently announced plans for an island-wide train network that would make accessing its beaches and mountains more straightforward - and the roads less congested. But don’t expect it any time soon. By 2045, local authorities are planning to have put in place four new train services comprising some 80 kilometres of tracks altogether. Due to the hilly nature of Tenerife, 22 km of that route is set to run through tunnels. Each train...

Sunscreen is essential for shielding your skin from the sun’s harmful rays - both on holiday and at home. But while it protects you, is it harming the environment around you? If you’ve ever lathered up then jumped into the sea, the answer is likely to be ‘yes’. Many of the chemicals contained in sunscreen are especially damaging to coral reefs and ocean life. It is estimated that over 5,000 tonnes of sunscreen wash off swimmers and into oceans worldwide, according to the US National Park Service. Expand that to all waterways, including rivers and lakes, and the number is closer to 13,000 tonne...

From phallic bottle openers to branded shot glasses, tacky souvenirs are never hard to find in a tourist hotspot. But one European city is looking to bring in regulations on just how tasteless these gifts can be. Barcelona city council is considering banning the display and sale of souvenirs that are “offensive or in bad taste”. This would include products that contain “homophobic or sexist” content. One local councillor has called the stalls and shops touting these wares a “shabby mess” that “degrade” the city. Barcelona souvenirs ‘degrade’ the cityCouncillor Jordi Coronas has criticised the ...

Plans are afoot to create the world’s longest circular hiking route, the 3,000 km Palmilhar Portugal (Walking Portugal). Developed to encourage tourists off the beaten track and away from familiar (and oversubscribed) destinations such as Lisbon and the Algarve, the route will ultimately cross through 100 lesser-known beauty spots up, down and across the country. Still a project in progress, the inaugural section of the loop will open in tiny Alenquer, just north of Lisbon, this July. The next section will be created in coastal Alentejo in the south of Portugal, followed by mountainous Trás-os...
