French start-ups are relieved following the results of a snap legislative election called by president Emmanuel Macron last month but remain wary about how the political shake-up will impact the striving sector. The results from the second round on Sunday surprised and contradicted opinion polls with the left-wing coalition Nouveau Front Populaire, or New Popular Front (NFP), gaining the most seats in parliament. Macron’s Ensemble coalition came in second place, followed by Marine Le Pen’s far-right Rassemblement National, or National Rally (RN). As neither of the three parties won a majority,...

Aside from the exploits of our national sporting heroes on the football pitches of Germany, eyes have been glued to other goings-on on the field from a tech point-of-view. From smart-enabled match balls and artificial intelligence to cryogenic recovery chambers, football is being transformed by the cutting-edge technology available to players, coaches, and officials. Nowhere is this more evident than at the Euro 2024 tournament, where advancements in areas such as equipment and sports science have been deployed on and off the field, designed to improve the game, the fan experience, and player ...

OpenAI said it is delaying the launch of its new artificial intelligence (AI) voice assistant because more time was needed for safety testing. The ChatGPT maker showed off the “advanced voice mode” technology in a demo last month, which was eerily human-like in its emotional responses and worked almost in real-time. OpenAI said it would roll out the voice technology to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users at the end of June, but said on X on Tuesday that “it needed one more month to reach our bar to launch”. “We’re improving the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content. We’re also w...

Much more followed on the digital front in the wake of those first 100 days. Now as Von der Leyen’s – possibly first – term comes to an end, we assess the state of technology files proposed over the past five years. Digital policy prioritiesOf the 114 tech files announced during the mandate, some 51 were agreed on, five were withdrawn and four were put on ice, according to data collated by the European Parliament. This does not represent the entirety of digital files introduced by the Commission, but they fall under the “A Europe fit for the digital age” package: one of the pillars of the poli...

A British teenager with severe epilepsy has become the first child in the world to receive a brain implant to control his seizures. Doctors at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital fitted a neurostimulator under 13-year-old Oran Knowlson's skull. It sends electrical signals deep into the brain, and has reduced his seizures by around 80 percent. After years of having up to 300 seizures a day, his mum, Justine, said: "I feel like I'm getting my child back a little bit, bit by bit. It's going to take time, but for the first time in ten years, we actually have hope." Three more children will soon ...

Artificial intelligence (AI) has dominated the headlines this year but it is not the only emerging technology that can help tackle the world’s challenges. Carbon-capturing microbes, privacy tech and livestock feeds are just some of the ten developing technologies identified by the World Economic Forum (WEF) that have the greatest potential to positively impact the world in the next three to five years. The findings by WEF were published on Tuesday in its annual Top 10 Emerging Technologies report in association with research publisher Frontiers. It draws on insights from global scientists, res...

Apple Intelligence will not be launched within the EU in 2024 because of privacy and security concerns, the US group has revealed. That means iPhone owners within the EU will not be able to plug into new Apple artificial intelligence (AI) features, such as Apple Intelligence, improvements to the SharePlay screen-sharing feature and iPhone Mirroring. The features, expected to be released later this year, will not come to the EU, because of the recent Digital Markets Act (DMA) that has led to increased regulatory complications. Apple says one of the main requirements of the DMA, interoperability...

Cloud modifying techniques used to cool the climate in California could eventually push heatwaves towards Europe, according to a new study. If global warming reaches 2C above pre-industrial by 2050, cloud modification could majorly warm almost all of Europe except the Iberian Peninsula. The research showed the biggest increases in Scandinavia, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. The study’s authors say their findings are concerning because there are next to no regulations in place for this kind of local climate modification and the consequences could be hard to predict. “Our study provides the ...

The UN secretary general warned on Thursday that "the perils of weaponising digital technologies are growing by the year". "The misuse of digital technology is becoming more sophisticated and stealthy, malware, wipers and trojans are proliferating” and cyber operations enabled by artificial intelligence (AI) are multiplying the threat, António Guterres added. He also warned the UN Security Council that “quantum computing could break down entire systems with its ability to breach encryption". But Guterres said that digital technology advances are also "revolutionising" society, not only bringin...

Personalisation and hyper-personalisation are trends already being jumped on by consumer-facing companies. But marketers working in the B2B sector are also increasingly recognising its value, with ‘relevancy’ now a buzz word in creative communication circles. “You want to be surgical,” Sylvain Bloche, International Digital Media and Strategy Director at Dell Technologies, told Euronews Business at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. “We use AI across various forms within B2B marketing. “One is about signals and data capture. Once you've captured more and more of these signal...
