Melting ice caps may have a bigger influence on the length of a day than previously thought, new research has found. This human-caused consequence of climate change is slowing the speed at which the Earth rotates, increasing the length of a day. It amounts to just a few milliseconds but it could have significant impacts in our modern, high-tech world as many of the computer systems we use every day rely on very precise atomic clocks. And, researchers say, it shows climate change could have a much bigger impact on the Earth’s spin than initially thought. How are melting ice caps making days lon...

Washington (AFP) - It's well known that as far as the climate crisis goes, time is of the essence. Now a study out Monday shows that the melting of the polar ice caps is causing our planet to spin more slowly, increasing the length of days at an "unprecedented" rate. The paper, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that water flowing from Greenland and Antarctica is resulting in more mass around the equator, co-author Surendra Adhikari of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory told AFP. "It's like when a figure skater does a pirouette, first holding her arms close to he...

Calling Zelensky's decision to remain in Kyiv and rally his country "fateful," Time editor in chief Edward Felsenthal said this year's decision was "the most clear-cut in memory." Since Russia's February 24 invasion, Zelensky has delivered daily speeches that are followed not only by Ukrainians but by citizens and governments around the globe. He has appeared on the front lin...

If you pick up the glass of water, you could probably guess the weight. But what if you held the glass of water in the air for an hour? Your hand would likely be aching, and it’d feel a lot heavier than sixteen ounces. And what if you held it in t...
