Washington (AFP) - The US trade gap grew slightly less than expected in May, to the widest level since late 2022, government data showed on Wednesday, as exports and imports both slipped. The overall deficit grew to $75.1 billion, from a revised $74.5 billion in April, said the Commerce Department. While this was the largest since October 2022, analysts had initially expected the gap to be the biggest in two years. Even though US consumption has been resilient in the face of higher interest rates, domestic demand has lost steam and there have been concerns that export growth would weaken. Expo...

Imports of eggs from Ukraine have reached levels which means that the Commission will now impose restrictions within the next two weeks, an EU spokesperson has told Euronews, after the executive announced restrictions on oat imports from Ukraine until 5 June 2025. Sugar imports are also in the crosshairs of the EU executive, according to trade experts familiar with the subject. The move is a consequence of the recent tweak – requested and obtained by France and Poland – to the temporary suspension of all tariffs and quotas on Ukraine’s agricultural exports after Russia’s full-scale invasion of...

Bari (Italy) (AFP) - G7 leaders turn their attention to China on Friday on the second day of an Italy summit, with a focus on how to protect their industries while avoiding an outright trade war with Beijing. Fair trade with the world's second-largest economy, notably on green technology, will be discussed by US President Joe Biden and the leaders of Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Britain in Puglia. The Group of Seven rich democracies will also be seeking a common response to China's alleged support of Russia's military expansion, which Washington says is fuelling the war in Ukraine...
