Want to delve into the UK’s rich history? With over 2 million TikTok followers, historian Alice Loxton is encouraging people to rediscover their heritage in places just a few hours from home. And it’s clear there is untapped potential: in a survey by online ticket company Trainline, 75 per cent of Brits said they would like to visit a historic site this year, yet only 10 per cent had ever been to one before. What’s behind this gap between intention and action? Almost a fifth of respondents said they don't know where to find historic sites or how to get to them. To fix this, Trainline has teame...

Platform 1 at Paddington Station is not usually a place I find myself at 11pm on a Monday night, but I’m here with good reason. I am about to catch Great Western Railway’s Night Riviera Sleeper from London to Penzance in Cornwall at the very tip of the UK’s southwest peninsula. I’ve been visiting Cornwall since before I could walk. I’ve taken the ordinary train, the coach and braved the summer getaway traffic jam chaos by car more times than I can count. But I’d never even considered taking a sleeper train as an option until now. Turns out this was a major mistake. A scenic sunrise and superb ...

Last June, France formally introduced a ban on domestic short-haul flights in an effort to bring down carbon emissions. In theory, the regulation prohibits flights where a rail alternative under 2.5 hours exists. Critics at the time said it didn’t go quite far enough, targeting very few routes and not including connecting flights. The aviation industry has fought back claiming the regulation is unfair. So, just over a year after it was introduced, what impact has France’s short-haul domestic flight ban had so far? Has France’s domestic flight ban cut emissions? Before the ban’s introduction, th...

A hot start to summer in Europe along with escalating overtourism protests have brought sustainable travel into focus. Italy has been particularly hard hit with excessive heat and overcrowding in popular destinations like Venice and Lake Como. According to UN Tourism, Italy hosted more than 63 million international tourists in 2019, making it one of the most visited countries on the planet. Tourism accounts for about 13 per cent of Italy’s GDP, a not insignificant chunk of the country’s national economy. As awareness grows, many tourists are focusing on how they can have a positive impact on t...

There are six times as many direct flight connections between European cities than direct train connections, a new analysis by Greenpeace has found. In several major European cities there are no direct trains to any of the other cities included in the study at all. If you’re a regular visitor to Tenerife, you’re probably aware of one of the destination’s few downsides: the slightly lacking public transport system. The government recently announced plans for an island-wide train network that would make accessing its beaches and mountains more straightforward - and the roads less congested. But don’t expect it any time soon. By 2045, local authorities are planning to have put in place four new train services comprising some 80 kilometres of tracks altogether. Due to the hilly nature of Tenerife, 22 km of that route is set to run through tunnels. Each train...

Hokkaido is known for its thrilling ski destinations, including the yearly Sapporo Snow Festival. However, the lavender and other flower fields in summer are equally worth seeing. Furano and Biei are the top sightseeing locations in Hokkaido, where you can see lavender, pansies and other colorful blossoms. In the past, there was no direct service from Sapporo to Furano. Passengers got on an express train to Asahikawa or Takikawa and changed to a local train. The entire journey took approximately three hours. Thanks to the new Furano Lavender Express train launched by Hokkaido Railway Company, ...

Denmark and Germany are one step closer to being linked by the world's longest underwater rail and road tunnel. Danish King Frederik X inaugurated the first element of a future 18-kilometre tunnel under the Baltic Sea on Monday. It will link southern Denmark to northern Germany and contribute to the transport sector's green transition. The Fehmarnbelt link, which is expected to open in 2029, will also cut travel from the present 45-minute ferry crossing to as little as seven minutes by train. It will link Roedby on the Danish side to Puttgarten in Germany, with onward connections by road and r...
