Moscow (AFP) - Evan Gershkovich, a US Wall Street Journal reporter, was sentenced to 16 years in a strict penal colony by a Russian court on Friday, after a fast-track espionage trial condemned by the US as a Kremlin ploy to secure prisoner swaps with the West. The 32-year-old son of Soviet emigres had reported from Russia for six years and carried on visiting the country even after dozens of other Western journalists left following Moscow's Ukraine offensive. Russia's critics say his arrest for spying in March 2023 showed the Kremlin was prepared to go further than ever before in what Preside...

Author Salman Rushdie does not have to turn over private notes about his stabbing to Hadi Matar, the man charged with attacking him, a judge ruled yesterday (Thursday 18 July). The alleged assailant’s contention was that he was entitled to the material as he prepared for trial. As we reported earlier this year, the trial was postponed and Rushdie's attacker was allowed to seek material related to Rushdie's upcoming memoir about the attack before standing trial. Matar’s lawyers in February subpoenaed Rushdie and publisher Penguin Random House for all source material related to Rushdie’s memoir ...

In a court filing yesterday (Tuesday 16 July), defense counsel for armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed argued her case should be reconsidered because prosecutors failed to share evidence that might have been exculpatory. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer last week brought Baldwin's trial to a sudden end based on misconduct of police and prosecutors over the withholding of evidence from the defense in the 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust. Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer for Rust, was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal on a movie set outside Santa...

Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) - The armorer on Alec Baldwin movie "Rust" filed Tuesday to have her conviction for involuntary manslaughter overturned, days after the Hollywood star's own trial over a fatal on-set shooting collapsed due to withheld evidence. Baldwin was holding a revolver during a rehearsal for the low-budget Western movie in October 2021 when a live round was fired, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding the film's director. Hannah Gutierrez, as the film's armorer, was responsible for sourcing dummy and blank rounds for the movie set. She accidentally loaded ...

Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) - Alec Baldwin's trial for involuntary manslaughter collapsed in spectacular fashion Friday as a judge found key evidence over a fatal shooting on the set of "Rust" had been withheld from the defense, and dismissed the case. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, presiding over the trial in Santa Fe, New Mexico, said bullets potentially linked to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins that could have been favorable to Baldwin's case had not been shared with his lawyers by police and prosecutors. The Hollywood A-lister immediately burst into tears, as the case -- wh...

Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) - Alec Baldwin's trial for involuntary manslaughter was paused Friday as his lawyers claimed police "buried" evidence about the fatal shooting on the set of the Western film "Rust," and called for the case's dismissal. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, presiding over the trial in Santa Fe, New Mexico, sent jurors home until Monday as she weighed the defense's request, which was described by prosecutors as irrelevant. Hollywood A-lister Baldwin was holding a gun in the direction of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal in October 2021 when the weapon fir...

Santa Fe (United States) (AFP) - Alec Baldwin was accused of violating basic gun safety rules and playing "make-believe" with a deadly weapon, as the Hollywood star's trial for involuntary manslaughter over a fatal shooting on the set of Western movie "Rust" began Wednesday. Baldwin was holding a prop revolver during a fateful rehearsal in October 2021 when it fired a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding the movie's director. In opening statements in a court in Santa Fe, New Mexico, prosecutor Erlinda Ocampo Johnson painted a picture of a powerful movie star who beh...

Manhattan prosecutors said yesterday (Tuesday 9 July) that they intend to bring new sexual assault charges against Harvey Weinstein as they anticipate a November retrial for the disgraced media mogul. Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg said in court that prosecutors are actively pursuing claims of rape that occurred in Manhattan within the statute of limitations. She said some potential survivors that were not ready to step forward during Weinstein’s first New York trial have indicated they are now willing to testify. But when pressed by the judge, Blumberg said prosecutors have not y...

Santa Fe (United States) (AFP) - Alec Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter trial over a fatal shooting on the set of Western movie "Rust" began Tuesday with the selection of a jury who will now decide if a crew member's death was his fault. The Hollywood A-lister was pointing a gun at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal in 2021 when it fired a live round, killing her and wounding the movie's director. Baldwin, 66, says he did not know the gun was loaded and did not pull the trigger. Prosecutors say he broke basic gun safety rules and acted recklessly on set. Dressed in a dark suit...

After having received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Turin last year, US actor Kevin Spacey is set to receive several gongs this month. It has been announced that he has won an award for his voice performance in the thriller Control, given by the Folkestone Independent Film Awards in the UK. The actor does not appear on screen in Gene Fallaize’s movie, his first film after his acquittal last year, in which Spacey plays a man who hijacks a government official’s car in order to exact revenge. The part is entirely vocal. The awards are set to take place in Folkestone, Kent, on 20 July. It’s uncl...
