China and Russia’s naval forces kicked off a joint military exercise only days after NATO allies called Beijing a “decisive enabler” of the war in Ukraine. Forces from both sides patrolled the western and northern Pacific Ocean on Sunday, according to the Chinese defence ministry. However, the ministry also said in its brief statement that the operation had nothing to do with international and regional situations and did not mean to target a third party. The exercise began in the Guangdong province on Sunday and is expected to last until mid-July. It aimed to demonstrate naval capability in ad...

China released a raft of disappointing economic data, causing its stock markets to fall on Monday. The benchmark Hang Seng Index dropped more than 1% in the first hour of trading, following a sharp rebound last week. Investors are worried about China's economic prospects amidst sluggish domestic demand, a property crisis, and escalating geopolitical tensions. Additionally, the country has launched its political meeting, the Third Plenum, which is expected to introduce policy reforms aimed at tackling growth challenges in the world's second-largest economy. Key policies may encompass government...

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping will soon be meeting in person for the second time in two months as they visit Kazakhstan for a meeting of an international group founded to counter Western alliances. Putin and Xi last met in May when the Kremlin leader visited Beijing to underscore their close partnership that opposes the US-led democratic order and seeks to promote a more “multipolar” world. Now they’ll be holding meetings as part of the annual session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which the two countries established in 2001 to discuss security co...

Rival candidates to take the helm of the European Commission sparred over the size of the bloc's trillion-euro budget, as the EU election campaign enters its final weeks. Ursula von der Leyen hinted at a new centrally-funded European air defence system and tariffs on Chinese goods as the German centre-right politican seeks a second term as Commission president. But she and her rivals – including Sandro Gozi, a French MEP from Emmanuel Macron’s Renew Europe party, and Danish right-wing candidate Anders Vistisen – don't see eye to eye on how to adjust the EU’s finances. “You don’t cut the budget...

A number of car manufacturers, such as BMW, Jaguar Land Rover and Volkswagen have come under fire for importing cars, or car parts, from Chinese companies and supplies suspected of using forced Uyghur labour. The US has made it illegal to import goods produced by forced labour. This especially affects the north-western Xinjiang region of China, where the Turkic Uyghur people are suspected of being exploited by both companies and the Chinese government for forced labour. To further enforce this, the US came up with the Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act (UFLPA) in 2021, which bans a number of ...

China has launched an "anti-dumping" investigation into chemical imports, in what appears to be a response to trade barriers introduced by the EU, the US and other countries. Polyoxymethylene copolymer, a plastic widely used in electronics and cars, is being sold at an unfairly low cost in China, therefore causing damage to domestic companies, said China's Ministry of Commerce. The investigation will focus on imports from the US, the EU, Taiwan and Japan, and could take up to 18 months to complete. China's long-held ambitions to bring Taiwan under its control will remain a threat to global security even if the self-ruling island bows to all Beijing's pre-conditions, President William Lai warned on Monday in his first speech after being sworn in. Lai, who hails from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), used his inauguration to offer China an opportunity to choose "dialogue over confrontation" under the principles of "parity and unity," with the resumption of tourism and the enrolment of mainland students in Taiwanese institutions as possible first steps. His policy echoes the broad lin...

Back in March 2023, Russian president Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping addressed each other as "dear friends". It appears not much has changed. During Putin's visit to China on Thursday, Xi said "the China-Russia relationship today is hard-earned, and the two sides need to cherish and nurture it." The exchange between the two autocratic allies says two things, according to observers. One: the pair are hard at work flaunting their strong relationship to the West, as the US and other Western powers continue to sanction Russia amid the war in Ukraine. Two: China likely contin...

Businessman Frank McCourt, owner of the Olympique de Marseille football club and former owner of the LA Dodgers, said on Wednesday that his organisation Project Liberty is putting together a consortium to bid for TikTok's US business. McCourt, who is organising the bid in consultation with investment bank Guggenheim Securities, is one of a number of investors hoping to benefit from a new federal law that requires TikTok's China-based parent company to sell the platform or face a ban. US lawmakers passed the bill over concerns that China could access sensitive American data through the app. If ...
