Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has applauded troops for their performance against the Russian offensive, in what he calls one of his most important visits in the war. "It is extremely challenging in the Donetsk directions, and it is in the Pokrovsk direction that there have been the biggest number of Russian assaults these weeks," he said while visiting the front line in the Donetsk region. On his visit to the command post, Zelenskyy presented Special Forces soldiers with state awards and congratulated them for their courage. He thanked the troops for their heroic operations both behi...

The hall of the largest thermal power plant in western Ukraine, the location of which is undisclosed because of security reasons, resembles a repair shop. Instead of supervising the operation of the units, employees salvage every component that can still be used. Before the war, it was one of the region's key power plants. Now it can only generate heat for the neighbouring village. The Russian shelling is also putting enormous pressure on the entire energy network in Ukraine, as it is targeting not only production facilities but also, for example, substations and the power grid. "The shelling ...

Russia and Ukraine have swapped 95 prisoners of war each, in their latest exchange deal. According to Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for POWs, some of those who were released on Wednesday had spent more than two years in captivity. They were captured in Mariupol, during Russia’s early offensive in the Kyiv region. It also confirmed that just over 3,400 people, both civilians and military, have returned from Russian captivity since the outbreak of the war. Zelenskyy said in a post on the Telegram messaging service that the United Arab Emirates had again brokered the agreements. The UAE has...

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy made a short stop in Shannon, Ireland on his way home from the NATO summit held in Washington DC. Zelenskyy met Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Simon Harris and when asked by journalists about President Biden introducing him as "President Putin" he said it was a "mistake" and that because the US had "done a lot" for Ukraine, "we can forget some mistakes". On Thursday, at the final press conference of the NATO Summit, Biden confused Zelenskyy with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and also referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as "Trump". Zelenskyy then went on to ...

Russia launched multiple ballistic and cruise missiles against Ukraine on Monday, with explosions felt and heard across Kyiv. Officials say at least seven people were killed. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the number of those injured was unknown as official assessments of the consequences of the attack were being carried out. Russia hit the capital using Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, one of the most advanced Russian weapons, the Ukrainian Air Force said. The Kinzhal flies at 10 times the speed of sound, making it hard to intercept. Buildings in the Ukrainian capital shook from the blasts, acc...

Our guests for week are Shada Islam from the New Horizons Project, Richard Schenk from MCC Brussels, and Antonios Nestoras from the European Liberal Forum. Panelists comment on a changing of the guard at meetings of EU ministers — where Belgium has passed the presidency baton to the much more controversial pick of Hungary. Armed with the provocative slogan "Make Europe Great Again", Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán started his six-month stint with a bang. After visiting Brussels, he popped to Ukraine to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, before making a surprise trip to Russia to see Vla...

Mark Rutte has made it! NATO finally appointed the outgoing Dutch prime minister as its next boss. This move became a formality after his only rival for the post, Romania’s president Klaus Iohannis, quit the race, his bid having failed to gain traction. NATO leaders will officially welcome him to their table at a summit in Washington in a little over a week. For Ukraine, the appointment of Rutte, a fierce critic of Vladimir Putin who described the so-called Russian peace plan as "absolutely crazy", was great news. And there was more good news for Kyiv this week. The EU formally opened talks on...

The European elections are over – and the horse-trading over future alliances, coalitions and top positions has begun. In meetings, meetings and more meetings, the winners and losers of the verdict of the voters started to get themselves ready for the next five years of legislative battles. We’ll come back to that in a minute. But first: it was a week of intense diplomatic activity for Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to the country’s Recovery Conference in Berlin, the G7 summit in Italy and a global peace summit in Switzerland. He appealed for short-term help in repairing Ukrai...
