Firefighters battled wildfires that broke out on the eastern Aegean islands of Chios and Kos on Monday. The blazes injured five people and Greece's prime minister has warned of a dangerous summer ahead saying the public's help was essential in limiting the impact of wildfires. Emergency services issued evacuation orders for those in the Metohi area of western Chios on Monday morning, urging them to head to a nearby beach. By the evening, more than 140 firefighters, along with eight teams of firefighters specialising in wildfires, seven water-dropping planes and three helicopters were fighting ...

This choice of this watery theme is far from random: Evia, Greece's second-largest island, hit the headlines in 2021 when wildfires tore through 46,000 hectares of forest and farmland in the island’s north following a lengthy heatwave. The destruction laid bare the stark reality of climate change-induced extreme weather – and the catastrophic consequences of an absence of water. Running across three locations in northern Evia, the festival-come-ecological initiative is an offshoot of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Greece’s most prominent film festival. What started out as “offer...

The authorities in the Sakha (Yakutia) region in Russia's Far East have declared an emergency in response to devastating wildfires burning across more than 331,000 hectares, the Civil Protection Ministry in Moscow reported on Monday. Around 1,500 firefighters had been deployed to douse more than 100 fires, it said. The ministry said that 353 fires were burning across an area of more than 600,000 hectares, with the Far East worst affected. Forests in the Amur region on the border with China and in the Baikal region in the centre of the country are also affected. The fires in the Arctic region h...

Intense wildfires above the Arctic Circle this June have released megatonnes of carbon into the atmosphere, according to EU scientists. Data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) shows that a majority of the fires are burning in the Sakha Republic in Russia's Far North. These seasonal blazes are moving north as climate change causes temperatures to rise in the Arctic. They tear through tundra and boreal forests, releasing greenhouse gases from the carbon-rich soil. ‘The largest increase in extreme wildfires over the last two decades’The Sakha Republic has seen much higher te...

Greece’s summer season has got off to a tragic start with its earliest heatwave on record causing several deaths this month. At least six tourists are known to have died in the searing temperatures, which also shut schools and sites including the Acropolis. One firefighter also lost his life while battling a wildfire last week, as blazes broke out across the country “almost every 10 minutes” according to the fire service. Temperatures in Athens are currently below the official heatwave threshold of 38C, but little respite is expected for the rest of the summer. There is no doubt that the Medit...

Canada's historic wildfires last year pumped more heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the air than India did by burning fossil fuels. Put another way, the fire spewed nearly four times the carbon emissions as flights do in a year. This is the same amount of carbon dioxide that 647 million cars put in the air in a year, based on US EPA data. The new data lays bare the vicious circle of wildfires - they are becoming more frequent due to global warming which is caused by burning fossil fuels which produces emissions. Forests remove a lot of emissions from the atmosphere so when they burn down they ...

“What the hell is a climate migrant? I don't know,” Dominic Kniveton, a professor of climate change and society at the UK’s University of Sussex, says with a hint of a smile. “That all depends on who is asking and who is determining the rules.” Immigration and climate change are two hot-topic political issues - with concerns about the former fuelling far-right gains in the EU’s recent election, as some voters back tougher rules. The climate crisis is slowly making more and more places uninhabitable due to extreme weather and a lack of ways to make an income, and it’s often assumed this will le...

Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of the world’s most extreme wildfires, a new study shows. Analysing 21 years of NASA satellite data, researchers found that severe burns more than doubled in frequency between 2003 and 2023. The intensity of these fires also increased 2.3-fold, with the six most extreme years happening from 2017 onwards. In Europe, Portugal is among the countries worst affected in recent years. Alongside the Amazon, Australia, Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Siberia and the western US, according to the study published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution....

Greece is bracing itself for what is expected to be a long wildfire season spurred by an unprecedentedly hot June, according to the country's national meteorological service. Firefighters were called to put out a blaze that erupted in the southern suburb of Athens, Vari, which started in an uninhabited area covered by olive trees and shrubs. Additionally, authorities issued text message evacuation alerts to the two nearby settlements of Lambrika and Kitsi. Although no injuries were reported, fire service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis said the blaze spread quickly due to strong winds. "We ...

With summer just around the corner, we’re all dreaming of sunshine and swimming in the sea - but with the hot weather comes the risk of wildfires. That’s where the European Union comes in. From June, they’re putting in place measures to bolster firefighting efforts in order to better protect communities across Europe - and the surrounding environment. Following devastating fires in 2023 - recorded as some of the very worst this century - the EU has put together a team of 556 firefighters from 12 countries. They’ll be strategically placed across key locations in Europe this summer, including in...
