The Houston Texans wrapped up the business side of their rookie class by signing offensive tackle Blake Fisher.
The Texans selected Fisher, the former Notre Dame star, with the 59th pick in the second round of last month’s NFL Draft. The team likely will use him at either left or right tackle behind either Laremy Tunsil or Tytus Howard. He also could be a utility player at other positions.
Aaron Wilson, an NFL reporter in Houston, first reported the news. The Texans haven’t made the news official, as yet. Wilson said he contract is for four years and worth $6.595 million.
The Texans, after owning the second and third picks in the 2023 draft, didn’t have a first rounder this year. Instead, Georgia defensive back Karmari Lassiter was the team’s first pick, going at No. 42 in the second round. Then came Fisher.
And Fisher was an excellent choice from a deep offensive linemen draft class. Fisher and fellow Irish star Joe Alt likely were the best tackle tandem in college football last season. The Chargers selected Alt with the fifth pick of the first round last month, with the Texans taking Fisher 54 spots later. Fisher started the past two seasons at right tackle with the Irish, but he began his career on the left side. Irish fans probably know that Fisher was the first true freshman to start a season opener at left tackle in Notre Dame history.
In addition, he was teammates with Texans o-lineman Jarrett Patterson at Notre Dame. And there’s more. The Texans media relations staff pointed out that both Fisher and C.J. Stroud had family dogs named Oreo. That’s bonding.
Overall, the Texans selected nine players in the draft, five defense and four on offense. All are now signed.
Houston already had a significant signing this week. The Texans gave receiver Nico Collins a three-year extension worth $24 million a season. He enjoyed a fantastic 2023, catching 80 passes for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns. He was only the fourth receiver in team history to exceed 1,000 receiving yards in a season. The first three to do so represented some of the biggest names in franchise history. They were Andre Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins and Brandin Cooks.
The Texans selected Collins, the former Michigan star, in the third of the 2021 NFL Draft.
