The LSU Tigers have rallied all the way back after falling down 5-0 in the first inning. Now, they have the lead over the Wofford Terriers in an elimination game during the Chapel Hill Regional.

It all came together for LSU in the top of the seventh inning with the game tied at six. That’s when the Tigers loaded up the bases on the Terriers and punched across their seventh run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Brown. It was LSU’s first lead of the game, cutting down what was a scary deficit early on the day.

That left two men on base for the catcher, Alex Milazzo. He went on to hit a ball sharply in the infield for a single before advancing on a throwing error. With that, LSU took an 8-2 lead.

Tommy White, one of college baseball’s best hitters, then came up with a chance to blow the game open. However, he wasn’t able to and that’s where the inning ended for the Tigers. Still, head coach Jay Johnson was more than happy to end the inning with the lead. He also wouldn’t have to wait long to add to that lead, with LSU adding on and starting to pull away in the eighth.

At various points during the game, Wofford led LSU by scores of 5-0 and 6-3. However, the Tigers were able to rally and consistently chip away at the lead.

After the first inning, Jay Johnson spoke to the ESPN broadcast, admitting that the Tigers got ambushed early by Wofford.

“We can’t get two and three until you get one,” Jay Johnson said. “So, that’s why our best pitcher is on the mound right now. Wofford did a nice job in the first inning. They ambushed Nate [Ackenhausen]. Now, we just need to stay poised and try to scratch a couple together and get back in the game.”

From there, Jay Johnson and LSU turned to Griffin Herring out of the bullpen. It ended up being a career game for the young pitcher, giving the Tigers six and a third innings out of the pen and shutting down the Wofford bats in the process. That kept LSU in the game to chip away at the lead.

The winner of the LSU-Wofford elimination game will go on to play North Carolina. If the Tar Heels win, they win the Chapel Hill Regional. If they lose, it would force another game on Monday to decide the Regional.
