The month of June has already been a big one on the recruiting trail for Oklahoma’s wide receiver room. With just two commits at the position coming out of the spring, the Sooners needed to make a move with top targets — and boy, did they ever.
Emmett Jones pulled two four-star commitments in the month, landing Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei standout Marcus Harris on his official visit, as well as Lancaster (Texas) star Emmanuel Choice over Texas A&M, TCU and USC.
While Choice wasn’t too much of a surprise, Harris definitely was, as he scheduled the official visit less than 24 hours before he arrived to Norman and then committed on the spot. Jones and Co. have had their eyes on another prize as well: four-star Homestead (Fla.) wideout Cortez Mills.
The nation’s No. 15 wide receiver, Mills took official visits to OU, Florida, Nebraska, Clemson and LSU this spring and summer. And while the home-state Gators were often thought to be the biggest threat to land him, it’s the Sooners who are trending heavily in the On3 Recruiting Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) ahead of his announcement on July 1.
That follows expert predictions from On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons, as well as OU recruiting insider Josh McCuistion, Nebraska insider Bryan Munson and Florida State insider Michael Langston.
“Oklahoma seems to be in a race to the finish line with Clemson,” McCuistion wrote on Friday. “The Tigers the long-thought leaders through the spring have watched as Emmett Jones has made a big run over the past few months.
… The Sooners seem to have edged ahead but until it’s over nothing should be counted as certain.”
Relationships, development are key factors for Mills
Earlier this week, Mills told Simmons he was still weighing his options but knows what he wants in a school at the next level.
“I am really still thinking about these schools and which is best for me,” he said. “I still have to figure some things out. When I make the decision, it will be about who I trust the most, who I feel can develop me on and the off the field and where I feel most at home. That is what I am working to figure out this week.”
The 6-foot-0.5, 165-pound Mills is the nation’s No. 109 overall prospect, No. 15 wide receiver and No. 17 recruit from Florida in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Mills was On3’s MVP at the Under Armour Miami camp back in March. On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power wrote this about Mills’ performance.
“Cortez Mills was the clear standout among a stacked wide receiver group at Under Armour Miami. The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder was the top pass-catcher on hand throughout drills and 1-on-1’s. We didn’t see Mills effectively covered all day with several of his reps in 1-on-1s resulting in emphatic wins. Mills is a smooth technician with natural wiggle and shake within his routes. He consistently breaks off defenders at the route stem. We saw him break two different defensive backs’s ankles in 1-on-1’s. Mills followed that up with a eye-popping contested catch, out-leaping the corner to come down with a high-point grab – perhaps the most impressive catch we saw on the day.“
