Journalist says there's something now becoming 'increasingly clear' about Anthony Gordon and Liverpool

For a day or two over the weekend it seemed as though Liverpool might genuinely sign Anthony Gordon.

With Newcastle United looking to solve their Profit and Sustainability issues, the former Everton academy graduate looked like he could be on the move.

But after Gordon was offered to Liverpool on Saturday, the Reds reportedly rejected Newcastle’s proposal of Jarell Quansah going the other way.

Ultimately, Gordon ended up staying at Newcastle beyond Sunday’s PSR deadline, as the Magpies solved their financial difficulties in other ways.

Nevertheless, the transfer window remains open, and senior figures at Liverpool are reportedly still keen on landing Gordon.

Anthony Gordon still in Liverpool’s sights

During his Everton days, it didn’t seem as though Gordon held any kind of love for Liverpool at all.

Even since joining Newcastle, the 23-year-old scored against the Reds last season and seemed to revel in that moment.

But since his exit from Goodison Park in January 2023, there has slowly been a shift in his mentality. Gordon heavily praised the Anfield atmosphere and has said all sorts of nice things about Liverpool.

As a result, it did not come as a big surprise to hear that Gordon was keen on joining the Reds when the prospect of a move was floated recently.

And according to journalist David Lynch, it has become ‘increasingly clear’ that the England international would in fact love to play for Liverpool.

“There’s a few things in terms of the long-term that we’ve learned there,” Lynch told Anfield Index. “That is, yes, they [Liverpool] absolutely like Gordon, he’s a player they’ve been tracking for a while.

“And I think we also got a sense that the player himself would like the move as well. I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that he’s a Liverpool supporter rather than an Everton fan and would love to play for Liverpool,” adds the reporter.

“So, I also think, yes, it’s done for now and we’ve passed the PSR deadline, Newcastle made those sales so that’s taken pressure off them. But I do think there’s legs here if certain conditions get met and certain things work out, we might not have heard the last of this one.”

What ‘conditions’ would need to be met?

Liverpool supporters got very excited on Saturday when it appeared that Gordon’s career could go full circle and he might re-join the Reds.

The Scouser left the Liverpool academy as a child and as recently as 2022 it was claimed that staff at Liverpool did not regret his exit.

From there, Gordon went on to become a star at Everton and perhaps a certain resentment of his boyhood club festered.

But with the prospect of a move back to Liverpool on the table, Gordon does now seem very enthused.

As Lynch points out, it does seem like a transfer that could reasonably happen. However, it’s also true that Liverpool have plenty of left-side options in the squad at the moment. Those would have to be streamlined in order for Gordon to arrive.

Gordon has also been reported as having a £100m price-tag on his head. That would need to significantly come down for any deal to be entertained. Still, don’t take your eyes of this one. Tony is a Red.
