The WNBA announced its annual All-Star team rosters on Tuesday evening and it’s a veritable who’s who of stars, including some very popular rookies like the Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese and the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark.
Then there are the usual suspects, too, made up by the members of the USA Olympic team.
But it’s safe to say the rookies have taken a large chunk of the spotlight this season as the league gets more eyes on it than it has had in a long time.
The popularity of stars like Reese has driven the sport to new heights. And it’s well-earned, too.
Reese was just named the WNBA Rookie of the Month for her performance during June, which was on another level. Not only did she average 14.5 points, 13.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game with the Sky over the last 30 days, she also set a WNBA record for most consecutive double-doubles in a single season.
She narrowly notched her 10th straight double-double, doing so with a free throw in the waning moments of a game on Sunday to get to 10 points. That sent her past Candace Parker‘s previous WNBA record of nine straight double-doubles in the same season.
She has quickly turned into one of the game’s rising stars, deservedly so.
Clark is no slouch in her own right, either. She very nearly became the first rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double, finishing just one rebound short in a recent contest.
Her fame knows few bounds, and now she’ll get to put it on display in the WNBA All-Star game.
The All-Star selections were made through a combination of voting by fans (50% of the vote), current WNBA players (25%) and a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters (25%).
