‘My understanding is’: Journalist says Liverpool have now stopped trying to sign £40m defender

Liverpool are in the market for a new centre-back this summer.

The Reds were said to be working on a centre-back signing a number of weeks ago, but, as of yet, there’s been no concrete movement on that front.

Arne Slot’s side have been linked with a number of different defensive options, including Riccardo Calafiori, but according to Ben Jacobs, speaking on NUFC Matters Liverpool are no longer working on signing the Bologna star, despite the fact they seriously considered signing him earlier in the window.

Liverpool no longer working on Riccardo Calafiori deal

Jacobs spoke about the £40m Italian defender, claiming that Liverpool are no longer actively working on this deal.

“Liverpool have been linked with Calafiori, and they have seriously considered him, but my understanding is that they’re not actively working on that deal anymore,” Jacobs said.

Calafiori coming to the Premier League

Calafiori may not be coming to Liverpool, but he’s still very likely to be coming to the Premier League.

Indeed, both Arsenal and Chelsea are said to be keen on the Serie A star, and the wheels are in motion for the defender to come to England.

As for Liverpool, somehow they’re still at square one in terms of their transfer activity this summer.

The Reds had spent close to £100m by this point last year as they tied up early deals for both Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, but this time around, the Reds haven’t done any deals.

Of course, with Euro 2024 and Copa America both taking place at the moment, deals are that much more complicated, and there is no huge rush given that it’s only the beginning of July.

However, as Liverpool have shown over the years, sometimes it is best to get deals done early to allow your new signings to settle in and have a full pre-season.
