‘Not seen that’: Stuart Pearce reckons ‘world-class’ Man City player hasn’t been that good at Euro 2024

Manchester City have seen numerous players from their squad feature for their countries in the 2024 European Championship.

With the group stage and knockout round of the tournament now complete, 10 players from City’s squad will be in the quarter-finals.

After Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol failed to help Croatia get out of their group, Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku were knocked out in Belgium’s knockout stage defeat to France.

Now – however – ahead of the upcoming quarter-final fixtures, one pundit and former City manager has shared his thoughts on what he’s seen from one particular figure from the Manchester club and how he’s fared for his country over the past few weeks.

Stuart Pearce says Kyle Walker has been disappointing at Euro 2024

While previewing England’s upcoming quarter-final match against Switzerland on talkSPORT, Stuart Pearce had this to say about Kyle Walker and his performances in the tournament so far.

He said: “I don’t think Kyle Walker is playing particularly well at right-back, I have got to say.

“I think he is a world-class right-back, I really do. I rate him that highly, but I have not seen that from him at this tournament.”

Walker hasn’t shown his best for England so far at Euro 2024

With four games played, Walker is one of the four outfield players to play every minute of action for the Three Lions in the competition.

Even though the defender has made more passes into the final third of the pitch (27) than any other England player, he has yet to win a tackle for his country.

His overall performances have earned the right-back a rather underwhelming rating of 6.54/10 from WhoScored, making him the tenth-highest-rated player in the England squad and the lowest-rated out of the four outfield figures who have played every minute.

This isn’t the first time Walker’s performances on the International stage this summer have been criticised, as Micah Richards said that he was caught out of position numerous times during England’s recent match against Slovakia.

Taking all of that on board, it’s understandable why Pearce has been unimpressed by what he’s seen from Walker.
