Baseball: Players add 5 PL all-stars after Fighter-heavy fan vote

Players voted seven new members to this year's Central and Pacific League All-Star teams, including five in the PL, where the fan voting was dominated by Nippon Ham Fighters.

The players' CL vote mostly mirrored that of the fans, with only Yomiuri Giants pitcher Shosei Togo and Yakult Swallows outfielder Domingo Santana being added.

The PL vote, however, was another story.

The fan voting, announced Tuesday, selected nine Fighters, but of those, only pitcher Sachiya Yamasaki, catcher Yua Tamiya and outfielder Chusei Mannami were also selected by the players.

The players also matched the fans by voting in SoftBank Hawks outfielders Kensuke Kondo and Yuki Yanagita, whose peers selected him as one of the PL's top three outfielders for the eighth time.

Kondo, a candidate to win a triple crown this year after falling short by a whisker last year, led the players vote by being named on 449 of the 737 ballots players cast.

Hawks first baseman Hotaka Yamakawa and third baseman Ryoya Kurihara were both added by the players as were Seibu Lions second baseman Shuta Tonosaki and shortstop Sosuke Genda, and Lotte Marines designated hitter Gregory Polanco.

While fans are allowed to vote for three pitchers, one starter, one middle reliever and one closer, players can only vote for one pitcher.

Game 1 will be at Nippon Ham's ballpark, Es Con Field Hokkaido, just outside Sapporo, on July 23. Game 2 will be July 24 at Tokyo's historic Jingu Stadium, the Swallows' home ground.

The managers will fill out their rosters next Monday, with the exception of one final player for each team to be selected by another fan ballot.
