'Here we go': Man City reach agreement to sell player Txiki called 'very exciting' for £7.6m - Fabrizio Romano

Manchester City have today agreed a £7.6 million deal with Real Sociedad for the sale of Sergio Gomez.

Gomez is to bring his spell at City to an end after two seasons with the club, in a development that will not come as too much of a surprise to fans.

Gomez, who joined the club from Belgian side Anderlecht, has been a bit-part player for City since making an £11 million transfer. He made 38 appearances for the club, with most of those coming as a substitute.

Pep Guardiola has seemingly just not had faith in the Spaniard.

And now, his frustrating spell is coming to an end, with Fabrizio Romano today reporting a deal is in place for his exit.

Gomez had been linked with Sociedad for several weeks.

The 23-year-old has long been open to departing the Etihad, and was keen to seal a move back to his homeland.

Initially, City and Sociedad were far apart on the fee Gomez would move for.

But Romano has said this evening on X: “Sergio Gómez to Real Sociedad, here we go! Deal in place after interest exclusively revealed weeks ago.

“€9m package, 15% sell-on clause to Man City and told #MCFC will also keep buy-back clause for Gómez. Final details then deal signed.”

€9 million equivalates to £7.6 million, meaning a slight hit for City in terms of what they originally bought him for.

It is unclear how much of this £7.6 million will be paid up front by Sociedad.

Best move for all parties

Gomez was always likely to depart City on some kind of basis this summer, and it is definitely the right move for all parties.

Gomez showed some signs of quality over the last two years, but obviously Pep was never truly convinced by him. That was evident in the way the manager fielded the likes of Josko Gvardiol, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji on the left side ahead of him.

Gomez was hailed as ‘a very exciting young talent’ by sporting director Txiki Begiristain when he signed two summers ago, but he seldom got the opportunity to showcase his ability.

A move to Sociedad could be a great move for him. He is going back to Spain and joining a club that fights for Europe most seasons. Last term, Sociedad played Champions League football and in 2024/24 they will play in the Europa League.

Hopefully, Gomez can thrive there.

While City have taken a small financial hit on the player, the sell-on and buy-back clauses are wise moves from the club.
